UConn head coach Geno Auriemma took a direct swipe at the WNBA’s latest lightning-rod debate.

When Geno Auriemma speaks, the entire basketball ecosystem listens, and for good reason. With 11 NCAA national championships, over 1,200 career wins, and a Hall of Fame resume built across four decades at UConn, his authority on the women’s game is virtually unmatched.

But what makes his voice resonate so loudly beyond Storrs is his total lack of a filter. Auriemma has never played the corporate media game. Whether he’s dissecting players or taking aim at the league, he cuts straight through the noise with pure honesty.

Shaq’s proposed WNBA rule change has received mixed reactions 😬 Would you like to see the rim lowered?

Shaquille O’Neal says the solution to making the WNBA more exciting is to lower the rim so players can dunk

“In men’s beach volleyball and women’s beach volleyball, the net is lowered just a little bit”

“The only thing missing from the WNBA to the NBA game is the dunk. I’m not… pic.twitter.com/xNIqiEfEEt

And that’s no different when it comes to the transgender situation going on in the WNBA.

In an interview with CNBC, Geno Auriermma is bound to cause controversy after claiming that the whole gender issue is completely made up and doesn’t exist.

The interviewer asked: “The issue of the moment is this sort of issue about transgender athletes, and so Cunningham came out and said, you know, obviously, you know, women’s basketball is for women, and I know you’ve made statements before generically about how women and men probably shouldn’t end up playing together. Obviously, the trans issue is a little different. Is that an issue that women’s basketball players should be talking about?”

Auriemma had this to say: “No, I don’t know of any trans players in the league? I don’t know any that have tried to play in the league and have been denied playing in the league. So it’s an issue that has been made an issue. That’s a non-issue. It doesn’t exist. I don’t know any other way to put it.

“At the basic level. You just want fairness. You want, but who do you want fairness for? You want fairness for everybody, and I don’t know whether that’s what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about accusing someone or some entity of something that doesn’t exist right now.

“The discussion is purely hypothetical. Hypothetical. How do you solve a hypothetical? I don’t. I don’t know. No one’s ever made a decision on it, so you can’t go back and say this was unfair or this was fair. It’s hypothetical. It’s like the people that complain about the Odyssey isn’t authentic. How do you know it’s a myth?”

Sophie Cunningham was one of the first to talk out on the transgender situation, and her desire to protect women and girls in the WNBA.

However, Auriemma has gone to the extreme end of the spectrum by claiming it’s all a myth.

Regardless of opinions, it’s a topic that needs to be resolved for the WNBA to move forward.
