The Lady Spartans and Lady Dinos met on the tennis courts in Castle Dale on Thursday in a Region 13 matchup. Both teams entered the contest with the same overall record at 2-3, but after falling in the first and second singles matches, Emery turned it on and won the final three to secure a 3-2 win.
The Dinos were coming off a big win over the Union Cougars by the score of 4-1. The Spartans were coming off a loss to the Region 13-leading Manti Templars. So both teams were looking to prove something on Thursday.
For the Dinos, Jessi King came out in her first singles match, with Ella Kelley taking a straight-set win 6-1 and 6-0. In the second singles match between Ireland Keil of Carbon and Harley Sitterud of the Spartans, it was Keil who claimed another win this season, 6-1 and 6-2. After the first and second singles matches were all Carbon, the remainder of the contests were all about Emery, starting in third singles where Zoee Perea won her match over Leah Sweeney in straight sets 6-4 and 6-3.
The first doubles match was the most intriguing matchup of the day as Brindlayn Grange and Audrey Livingston won a marathon over Carbon’s Lyra Hicks and Rachel Flores in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (11-9). The second doubles contest between the Spartans Abbie Jensen and Channell Avlies and the Dinos Bella Jensen and Cecily Riley went to Emery 7-5 and 6-4.
The Lady Dinos sit at 2-4 overall and will be back on the court Tuesday, September 1, when they welcome the Gunnison Valley Bulldogs to Price. Matches are set to begin at3:30 p.m.
Up next for the 3-3 Lady Spartans will be a trip to Mount Pleasant to take on the North Sanpete Hawks, also on Tuesday.
