With less than three minutes remaining in Fort Worth, Texas, Georgia freshman forward Maya Woolforde refused to let up. Racing down the left flank, she stretched to send a cross into the head of graduate forward Emma Pettersen, who cut TCU’s lead to 3-2. But the Horned Frogs held on to hand No. 17 Georgia women’s soccer an early-season upset loss.
Sophomore forward Mya Townes opened the scoring early at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium, controlling a pass from senior midfielder Honoka Hamano, turning toward goal and slotting the ball into the bottom-left corner for a Bulldog lead.
TCU responded just two minutes later when sophomore forward Eres Freifeld capitalized on the counterattack, sending a shot just out of Georgia sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Folliard’s reach. Fifth-year defender Grace Coppinger, making her TCU debut, added another goal 15 minutes later to give the Horned Frogs a one-goal advantage.
Georgia continued to press, with Woolforde, Hamano and fifth-year midfielder Sage Glover each recording a team-high two shots. But the Bulldogs conceded again in the 62nd minute, when TCU’s junior midfielder Emma Yolinsky extended the lead to 3-1, leaving Georgia unable to recover from the two-goal deficit.
The Bulldogs get back on the road Sunday for a much shorter trip to Macon, Georgia, where they will face Mercer at 6 p.m., still early in the season and looking to find their way.
