BALTIMORE – UMBC men’s soccer scored five unanswered goals to secure a 5-1 victory over Presbyterian on Friday night, improving to 2-0 to start the 2026 season.
Aidom Tadesse tied the contest in the 36th minute off a feed from Shawn Shvartshtein before Presbyterian was issued a red card in the 40th minute, flipping the match on its head. The Retrievers scored a pair of goals in quick succession to take a 3-1 lead into the break.
In the 41st minute, Langston Fabiyi nearly gave the Retrievers the lead, but was ruled offside. Less than two minutes later, Adamo Pantaleo broke the tie, scoring his first career goal off an Abdi Bahur assist in the 43rd minute. In the 44th minute, UMBC struck again as 6-7 freshman Nico Banks added his first goal, skying up to head home a corner kick from Jonas Nistad to put the Retrievers ahead 3-1 at halftime.
Flynn Holdem nearly put the Retrievers ahead by three in the 59th minute, but kept his work rate high as he earned a penalty for UMBC in the 61st minute. Holdem received the ball at the edge of the box, made an excellent turn, and was dragged to the ground, earning a penalty that was upheld by VAR review. Abdul Kamara took his second penalty of the season and slotted it home to extend the Retriever lead to 4-1.
Kamara struck again, making it three goals in two games as a Retriever, pushing the lead to 5-1 with a beautifully chipped ball in the 69th minute. The Retrievers had a handful of chances to make it 6-1, none closer than Nick Lentz smashing one off the woodwork in the 72nd minute, but the score would remain 5-1 until the horn sounded. Every single healthy field player for the Retrievers saw game action on Friday evening.
UMBC outshot Presbyterian 29-5 in the match, with Gabe Carvalho’s goal in the 13th minute finishing as the only shot on target for the Blue Hose. UMBC took 12 corner kicks in the match, while Presbyterian earned zero.
The Retrievers’ five goals marked the first time since October 8, 2022, a 5-1 win over UMass Lowell, in which they scored five times in a game. Over the first two games of the season, UMBC is out-shooting its opposition 56-12.
