If the first 54 holes at East Lake Golf Club are any indication, the final round of the 2026 Tour Championship promises to be a thrilling sprint to the end of the PGA Tour season. While Viktor Hovland leads the pack at 15 under, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are part of a seven-person chase pack all within five shots of the lead entering Sunday.

Hovland produced a flurry of birdies on the back nine to move ahead of Ryan Gerard in Atlanta. That pairing will once again go out last in the final round, and they’ll spend Sunday trying to hold off the biggest names in the sport who are stacked up behind them in pursuit of the FedEx Cup title. 

Scheffler, the world No. 1, put on a ball-striking exhibition for fans as he shot a bogey-free 4-under 66 that was as frustrating as it was tremendous. For as well as he hit the ball, he struggled on the greens, sliding a handful of birdie putts just by the edge, eventually leading to Scheffler getting heated on the 13th green. 

Even with a non-cooperative putter, Scheffler managed to pull within three shots of the lead at 12 under and will be a serious threat on Sunday to win his second FedEx Cup title. 

Also in the top 10 are the second- and third-ranked players in the world. McIlroy began the day seven shots off the pace, but he made up ground in a hurry with a spectacular performance that saw him make nine birdies on Saturday on his way to a 7-under 63. That got him to 10 under, opening the door for a Sunday charge if he can replicate his fantastic effort on the greens. 

McIlroy is joined at 10 under by Cameron Young, who had an up-and-down day that included a shocking double bogey on the 10th after chunking a wedge from the fairway but a few sensational shots to keep him in the mix. 

As Young (62) and McIlroy (63) have proven by going low on consecutive days, there are basement-level scores out there at East Lake. That brings hope to everyone within five shots of Hovland’s lead, and with the caliber of player in that seven-man chase pack, the Norwegian star will know that he’s going to have to produce his best to capture a second FedEx Cup title.

1. Viktor Hovland (-15): Hovland had a steady front nine, making the turn at 1 under, but he seriously kicked it into gear on the back. The 2023 FedEx Cup champion closed with four birdies in his final six holes to pull a nose in front of Gerard and grab the 54-hole lead by himself. Hovland hasn’t been particularly sharp with the irons this week (23rd in strokes gained on approach), but he’s leading the field in putting and continues to hit fairways at a high level.

If he can keep finding the short grass off the tee, he’ll have plenty of opportunities to keep scoring in the final round, and while putting isn’t always his strong suit, he’s clearly got a great feel for East Lake’s greens. 

Hovland wasn’t on most people’s radar coming into the week, as he hasn’t had a top 10 finish since winning the Travelers, but when he’s on, he can beat anyone in the world. He proved that in Hartford, Connecticut, staring down Scottie Scheffler in a playoff, and his record as a 54-hole leader is terrific, as he’s converted five of his six leads or co-leads entering Sunday at PGA Tour events into victories.

Hovland’s late birdies likely eliminated the group at 9 under as legitimate threats, leaving these players with a legitimate opportunity to usurp Hovland during Sunday’s final round. The least accomplished player who will tee off in the final four pairings is Gerard, but he proved on Saturday that he’s not going to be afraid of the moment, as he stayed at the top of the leaderboard throughout the third round to shoot a 66 and stay in the final pairing for Sunday. 

Scheffler will look to exact some revenge on Hovland for what transpired in Hartford, but if he’s going to make a Sunday charge, he’s going to have to crack the code of East Lake’s greens. Åberg and Scott drafted off each other to matching 65s on Saturday to get into the mix. Both are winless this season, but a victory would mean something different to each. 

For Åberg, he’s still looking to prove himself as one of the game’s elite, and a Tour Championship win would be the best win of his young career. For Scott, he’s looking for one final hurrah at 46 years old, hoping to turn one of his best weeks of the season into a second Tour Championship title — 20 years after his first. 

As for McIlroy and Young, they’re going to need to find some early success and get hot, because starting five shots back on a course where no one is shooting over par means they need another 62 or 63 to have a chance at winning.

The concern heading into the weekend was that Hovland’s shaky ball-striking and red-hot putting might not be sustainable. That certainly was not the case on Saturday, and he looks like he just has these greens figured out to a degree no one else in the field does. Even his misses are right on with speed and just burning the edges, and as long as he keeps finding fairways, that is going to lead him to another FedEx Cup title.
