Following a frustrating defeat against Dundee last time out and the news that manager Jim Goodwin would miss the trip, United faced a difficult task at Kilmarnock, where the Terrors had not won in over four years. What followed, however, was an excellent performance.
Both sides made changes from their previous outings, with Kilmarnock bringing Jonathan Meier, Cathal McCarthy and Mark O’Hara into the starting line-up, while Joshua Rawlins, Zac Sapsford and Daniel Bennie came into the United XI. The changes reflected both sides’ ambitions to earn their first Premiership victories of the season.
Kilmarnock got the match underway and saw the first couple of opportunities fall their way. Tyreece John-Jules headed towards goal in the second minute, before another Killie attack rounded out the opening five, although Walton was untroubled in the United net, making a simple save.
United’s first opportunity came in the seventh minute, as Zac Sapsford worked a cross into a dangerous area in the centre of the Kilmarnock box. It was met by the head of Michael Forbes, but the defender was unable to keep his effort beneath Stryjek’s crossbar. Medhi Merghem then had an opportunity to strike from range a couple of minutes later, but his effort deflected off a Tangerine shirt and behind for a goal kick.
The first disciplinary action of the afternoon came in the 10th minute, as referee Nick Walsh brandished a yellow card in the direction of United defender Bert Esselink, who was deemed to have been overly physical in his challenge on Kilmarnock captain Greg Kiltie.
The end-to-end nature of the opening ten or so minutes continued, with Kilmarnock seeing two opportunities blocked and cleared within seconds of each other. At the other end, two efforts from Daniel Bennie were blocked, with the latter resulting in a corner kick.

And from the resulting corner came the opening goal. Medhi Merghem received a short pass before whipping the ball into the box, where Emmanuel Agyei rose highest to head home past Stryjek from close range and give United an early lead.
The goal seemed to settle United’s nerves a little, and the Terrors began to impose themselves, creating several more opportunities over the next ten minutes. Will Ferry came closest to extending United’s lead, firing narrowly wide of the Kilmarnock goal in the 16th minute.
Kilmarnock were forced into an early change as Robbie Deas was replaced by George Stanger in the 19th minute due to injury. United continued to press for a second, with Medhi Merghem delivering multiple crosses into the area from the right-hand side, although none could be converted.
Kilmarnock had claims for a foul on the edge of the area waved away as Forbes put in a strong challenge just before the half-hour mark. The hosts then began to press in search of an equaliser, with Jack Walton forced into a great save low to his left to prevent a Killie header from sneaking inside the post.
United, however, showed that they were not content with the 1–0 scoreline. Zac Sapsford appeared to have been fouled as he looked to get in behind the Kilmarnock defence, but referee Nick Walsh instead deemed the Australian to have fouled his marker and awarded the free kick to the hosts.
With 10 minutes left to play in the first half, United were awarded a spot kick when Cathal McCarthy was judged to have fouled Michael Forbes at a corner. After a brief VAR check confirmed the decision, Zac Sapsford stepped up and fired an unstoppable penalty beyond Max Stryjek to double United’s advantage. Minutes after securing United’s second, Sapsford entered the referee’s book for a foul on Stanger.
United further extended their lead in the 41st minute, as Will Ferry received the ball on the left-hand side of the box before chopping onto his unfavoured right foot and curling a superb effort into the far corner. Kilmarnock’s Joe Hugill then entered the book for a late challenge on Ferry, before the half-time whistle brought a dominant opening 45 minutes to a close with United three goals to the good.

Just before the second half began, Kilmarnock introduced two further changes, with Meier and Cle?cenco replaced by Jamie Brandon and Djenairo Daniels. The hosts started the second half brighter, with Joe Hugill flashing an effort over the bar after a cutback from the left side of the box. Minutes later, John-Jules forced Forbes into a block before directing a header tamely into the grasp of Walton.
United seemed happy to soak up the pressure and attack with pace on the counter, leading to an opportunity in the 52nd minute for Abdoulaye Yoro. The winger struck across goal from the right side of the box, but Stryjek was quickly down to make the save.
Kilmarnock grew frustrated in their attempts to find a response, with several attacks halted by free kicks as well as some good defensive blocks from a resilient United back line. The hosts did manage to create a decent opportunity in the 58th minute, forcing Walton into a good save low to his right from inside the box.
Just beyond the hour mark, both sides made double substitutions. O’Hara and John-Jules made way for Bailey Rice and Cole Burke for Kilmarnock, while the impressive duo of Medhi Merghem and Abdoulaye Yoro were replaced by Jesse Randall and Lachlan Rose for United.
The game then settled into a more passive rhythm, with neither side creating any chances of note. Ferry entered the referee’s book for a foul on Burke shortly before the 70th minute.
In the 73rd minute, United created a great chance for a fourth, as Bennie got onto a recycled ball wide on the left of the Kilmarnock box before whipping in a brilliant cross towards Zac Sapsford. The Australian couldn’t generate the power or accuracy needed to beat Stryjek, who did well to save the effort. Shortly afterwards, Sapsford made way for Neil Farrugia with fifteen minutes remaining.
Kilmarnock continued to search for a way back into the match, with Bert Esselink making a superb block outside the area. At the other end, Lachlan Rose found himself in behind the Kilmarnock back line, only to be denied by a good save at the feet of Stryjek.
United’s second-half efforts would finally be rewarded, as Ferry drove down the left-hand side from inside his own half, skipping beyond two players before sending an exquisite deep cross towards the back post. Jesse Randall was waiting to side-foot a volley beyond Stryjek, rubber-stamping the victory and securing his first goal in Tangerine.
Dario Naamo joined the fray for the final 12 minutes shortly before the restart, replacing Daniel Bennie. Both sides appeared settled with the final result and, barring a couple of chances for Esselink and Randall, as well as a yellow card for Kilmarnock’s Bailey Rice for preventing Esselink from breaking away, the match had all but reached its conclusion.
Nick Walsh’s final whistle brought an end to a match in which United had not only produced a tremendous result at a traditionally awkward venue, but secured their first victory of the season in emphatic style.
