BRUTUS, Mich. (News 10) – Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll of Haslett came from behind with a 4-under 68 final round and won the 30th GAM Women’s Senior Championship presented by Golf Digest at Hidden River Golf & Casting Club Tuesday.
It was the fourth GAM Women’s Senior title for the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member, who is also the head women’s golf coach at Michigan State University.
Slobodnik-Stoll trailed Julie Massa of Pentwater, another Michigan Golf Hall of Famer, by two shots starting the final round, but shot 4-under 32 on the front nine and went on to win her record 24th GAM individual title and add her name once again to the Sara Wold Trophy.
“I hit a lot of shots close today and I was making putts,” said Slobodnik-Stoll, who played in the recent U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur Championship at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor and made the 36-hole cut.
“It’s funny how different, like mentally and physically, things feel on certain days, and I think yesterday was a little bit of like an adjustment after what I got to do last week,” she said.
“It was such a different environment with a such a different feel, and I had to adjust to that. It was interesting mentally. I was like, okay, we’re back at the GAM Senior. I’ve got to play good today.”
Slobodnik-Stoll’s 68 gave her 1-under 143 for the championship. Massa shot a second consecutive 73 for 146 and second place.
Lori Schlicher of Lewiston, the defending champion, shot 77 for 155 and third place and Shelly Weiss, the 2018 champion, shot 78 for 156 and fourth place.
Slobodnik-Stoll said she learned at Barton Hills and playing this week that it doesn’t matter what level of golf in which you are competing; all the players are battling the game mentally.
“The players I played with last week were trying to win the U.S. Open, and I was trying to fight my own mental things of just feeling like I can do this and I belong here,” she said. “I realized we are all going through keeping where we are in check and becoming better at being mentally tough.”
She acknowledged the unprecedented 24 individual wins is nice to hear.
“I think that means I’ve played a long time,” she said. “I’ve played well for a long time. I guess that sounds better.”
