The New York Jets worked out free-agent quarterback Will Levis on Thursday following his release from the Tennessee Titans, according to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.
Rosenblatt added that if the Jets decide to sign Levis, it will be as part of their practice squad.
Levis spent three seasons with the Titans after they selected him in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft, but they cut him on Sunday after deciding to go with Cam Ward and Mitchell Trubisky as the quarterbacks on their 53-man roster.
Levis, 27, did not see any game action last season, but he started 21 contests over the course of 2023 and 2024, posting a 5-16 record.
After throwing for 1,808 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions in nine starts as a rookie, Levis was named Tennessee’s starter entering 2024, but he did not take a step forward.
Levis went just 2-10 in his 12 starts, completing 63.1 percent of his passes for 2,091 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
The Titans had the worst record in the NFL in 2024, prompting them to select Ward first overall in the 2025 NFL draft. At that point, the writing was on the wall regarding Levis’ future in Tennessee.
Should Levis join the Jets, he will enter into one of the league’s most uncertain quarterback situations.
Veteran Geno Smith is New York’s starter with rookie fourth-round draft pick Cade Klubnik serving as his backup. The Jets also have Bailey Zappe on their practice squad.
All signs point toward the Jets using a high pick on a quarterback in the 2027 NFL draft, but this season could give one of the existing quarterbacks on their roster to stick around as a backup or bridge starter next season.
Should Levis make it onto the Jets’ practice squad and eventually their active roster, it is possible he could establish himself as a long-term option in New York, even if it is in a reserve role.
