The WNBA has been at the centre of a debate regarding whether transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in women’s sports.

Sophie Cunningham’s comments over the summer caused much debate at the time after she spoke about wanting to protect girls from biological males, while Enes Kanter and Royce White have since declared for the WNBA draft next year.

Now, Lara Trump has weighed in on the situation and shared a petition calling for the WNBA to enact a ‘female-only’ eligibility criteria.

Lara Trump shares Nancy Hogshead’s WNBA petition

Taking to her official X/Twitter account, she shared a link to the petition and wrote: “I’ve been covering this issue on my shows for weeks, and I keep hearing the same thing from athletes and others speaking out about women’s sports: the WNBA needs to define the W.

“3x Olympic gold medalist Nancy Hogshead is asking the league to finally do one thing, make sure the WNBA is for WOMEN. It really shouldn’t be this complicated. Add your name to Nancy’s petition:”

The petition, set up by Nancy Hogshead, has over 18,000 signatures at the time of writing.

It is titled ‘The WNBA Should Enact “Female-Only” Eligibility Criteria’ and within it, Hogshead states: “I am calling on the WNBA to explicitly clarify that ‘woman’ means female for eligibility purposes, and to protect fair and safe competition for female athletes.”

The WNBA held a task force meeting over trans athletes last month but after it concluded, they did not announce any rule changes.

It remains to be seen if they are going to make any updates to their eligibility rules prior to the next draft in April 2027.
