FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas soccer finally found its offensive rhythm before the start of Southeastern Conference play. Now, the Razorbacks will find out whether that momentum can carry over against a tougher opponent.
Arkansas closed nonconference play with consecutive shutout victories, defeating Little Rock 9-0 on Aug. 30 before beating Jackson State 5-0 on Friday at Razorback Field. The Razorbacks scored 14 goals across the two matches while allowing none.
The recent results have provided a needed boost for an Arkansas team that began the season with losses to Baylor, North Carolina and Clemson, along with a draw against Loyola Maryland. The Razorbacks enter SEC play with a 2-3-1 record.
Against Jackson State, Arkansas controlled the match from the opening whistle. Zoe Susi scored twice in the first 17 minutes, Avery Wren helped create another goal off a free kick and the Razorbacks led 3-0 at halftime.
Vailana Tu’ua added her first goal of the season in the 76th minute, and Ivy Harding scored her first collegiate goal late in the match. Arkansas finished with a 33-4 advantage in shots, while freshmen goalkeepers Emily Jenkins and Julia Ivanova combined for the shutout.
The offensive production has been spread across the lineup. Eight different players scored in the victory over Little Rock, while five Razorbacks contributed to the scoring against Jackson State.
That depth could become important as Arkansas moves into conference play. The Razorbacks will face a Texas team that presents a much different challenge than their final two nonconference opponents.
Arkansas will host Texas at 8 p.m. Thursday at Razorback Field. The match will be televised on SEC Network and will mark the Razorbacks’ first conference game of the season.
The matchup should provide a clearer indication of how much progress Arkansas has made. The Razorbacks have shown they can create chances and finish against overmatched opponents, but maintaining that production against an SEC opponent will be more difficult.
Defensively, Arkansas also will try to build on its recent form. The Razorbacks have not allowed a goal in their last two matches, but Texas will test whether that improvement can continue against stronger attacking players.
Arkansas’ ability to maintain possession, create opportunities and turn those chances into goals will be key. The Razorbacks also will need to avoid the slow starts and defensive mistakes that contributed to their early-season losses.
The recent victories have given Arkansas confidence, but Thursday’s match will determine whether that confidence is the beginning of a turnaround or simply the result of favorable matchups.
With SEC play beginning at home, the Razorbacks have an opportunity to turn their late nonconference surge into something more meaningful. A strong performance against Texas would give Arkansas an early statement win and provide evidence that the team is ready for the challenges ahead.
Arkansas hosts Texas on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 8 p.m. at Razorback Field, the Razorbacks’ first SEC match of the season.
