DECORAH, Iowa – The St. Olaf College women’s soccer team yielded a last-minute goal and was forced to settle for a 3-3 road tie against Luther College on Wednesday night at Luther Soccer Field.
In its third game this season against American Rivers Conference opposition, St. Olaf (2-0-2) led 2-0 midway through the first half before Luther (1-1-1) tied it at 2-2 early in the second half. After the Oles went back ahead midway through the second half, the Norse got an equalizer off a corner kick, their third set-piece goal of the game, with 35 seconds remaining to force the tie.
Senior Emily Johnson, the reigning Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Offensive Player of the Week, assumed sole possession of third place in recorded program history in career goals (35) and points (80) with a goal and an assist in the tie. First year Emmarie Becker netted her first collegiate goal, while junior Rachel Anderson also got a goal.
St. Olaf wasted little time getting on the board first when Johnson scored with a free kick to the top-right corner after the Oles earned a free kick just outside of the box. Johnson’s goal was her sixth of the season, all of which have come in the last three games.
Halfway through the opening 45 minutes, Becker doubled St. Olaf’s lead by getting on the end of a corner kick from senior Wren VanDeWalker and one-timing the ball into the net from close range. Luther responded less than two minutes later, however, on a penalty kick by Suzett Hinds Cruz to make it a 2-1 game at halftime. Becker nearly got her second goal of the half but hit the crossbar following another corner kick.
The Norse tied the game at 2-2 less than three minutes into the second half when Anya Kennedy was on hand to head the ball in after Ava Stemler’s free kick came back off the crossbar. The Oles hit the woodwork for the second time in the game in the 68th minute when Johnson’s one-timer from the top of the box rattled the crossbar.
St. Olaf proceeded to reclaim the lead less than 90 seconds later when Johnson got around a Luther defender on the right side and sent a low cross into the box for Anderson to slot home for her second goal in as many games. Anderson has recorded either a goal or an assist in all four games this season.
With time winding down, Luther earned a pair of corner kicks in the final 90-plus seconds, and Katelyn Lynch got on the end of the second one to head in the equalizer for the hosts’ third set-piece goal of the game. The Norse scored with three of their four shots on goal in the game.
St. Olaf held advantages of 17-6 in shots, 11-4 in shots on goal, and 7-3 in corner kicks in the game. Reese McCabe made eight saves for the Norse, while senior Clara Luger had one for the Oles.
St. Olaf will be back on the road on Saturday, Sept. 12 for a 6 p.m. kickoff at UW-Platteville.
