Kyle Shanahan will remain the 49ers head coach for the long term after signing an extension this offseason.
The previously unreported move was revealed by Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix on Friday following the 49ers’ win over the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne.
Shanahan, per Pelissero, was previously believed to be signed through 2027. Pelissero did not confirm the length of his new deal, but it will take him well beyond a decade as San Francisco’s head coach.
It is noteworthy that there have, as yet, been no simultaneous reports of a contract extension for general manager John Lynch.
Lynch is signed through the end of this current season having last signed an extension back in 2023.
Shanahan and Lynch came as a package way back in 2017 when the latter was recruited as GM after Shanahan agreed to become the head coach.
Lynch has previously had offers to return to broadcasting, reportedly turning down one from Amazon back in 2022.
Of course, given how Shanahan’s extension went unreported in the offseason, there’s a chance the 49ers have already made a similar move with Lynch that has not yet been made public.
However, at this moment, Shanahan’s contract being announced on its own raises the possibility of an end to their partnership.
The 49ers’ dominant 27-7 win over the Rams took Shanahan to 83-67 in the regular season. He is 9-5 in the postseason, with last season’s divisional round loss to the Seattle Seahawks his first playoff defeat before the Conference Championship stage.
Shanahan moved level with former 49ers coach Buck Shaw with his 92nd combined win. He will surpass Shaw and move into 53rd on the all-time combined wins list when the 49ers claim their next victory.
