Springfield’s Sam Lemon outlasted Ridley’s Giavonna Stanis in a marathon three-set battle at first singles Wednesday, winning 7-6 (7-5), 6-6, 7-6 in the Cougars’ 5-0 Central League girls tennis victory.
The match featured two set tiebreakers and was easily the longest match of the afternoon.
In other singles play, No. 2 Isabel Cantando and No. 3 Lauren Johnson cruised to straight-set victories.
Springfield also swept the doubles courts with Claire Cronin and Fiona McLaughlin, and Maya Bhattacharya and Ankie Liu, both winning in straight sets.
In the Catholic League:
Cardinal O’Hara 4, Archbishop Wood 1: Marielle Farrell was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at first singles and Natalie Repino was victorious in the second match 6-3, 6-3, for the Lions.
Paris Price and Ella Eusebio claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at first doubles.
Girls Volleyball
Emily DePetris recorded 22 kills to help Springfield to a 3-0 Central League win over Marple Newtown Wednesday. The set scores were 25-19, 26-24, 26-24.
Mady Morris added five kills and two blocks, while Halle Harris chipped in with three digs for the Cougars.
In another Central League match:
Garnet Valley 3, Harriton 0: Cara Furchner finished with 11 kills and Morgan Woodlin added eight as the Jaguars swept the Rams 25-19, 26-24 and 25-20.
Alex Graif dished out 13 assists, while Isabella Francani (two blocks) and Lucia DeVuono (13 digs) led the GV defense.
In nonleague action Thursday night:
Ridley 3, Episcopal Academy 0: Izzy Verlinghieri handed out 21 assists and Katie Borcky racked up 11 kills to power the Green Raiders to a 25-15, 25-19, 25-15 sweep of the Churchwomen. Naomi Engle added six kills and Ava Friel notched eight digs.
Izzy Favini had four kills for Episcopal.
Springfield 3, Cardinal O’Hara 1: DePetris (20 kills) had another big night on the offensive end and Cassi Solt orchestrated the attack by dishing out 34 assists. Roni Rosini excelled on defense with 24 digs.
Agnes Irwin 3, Nazareth Academy 0: The Owls improved to 3-0 on the season with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-18 sweep of the visiting Pandas.
Field Hockey
Springfield showed that sharing is caring in Thursday’s 7-0 romp over Bonner & Prendergast.
Seven players scored one goal for the Cougars: Rosy Caramanico, Avery McIntyre, Mia Wainwright, Ella Smyth, Neilee Capstick, Kelsey Bowen and Madison Guille. Riley McGowan and Cecilia Wagner combined for the shutout in the cage.
Cara Schaffer finished with 19 saves for the Pandas.
In other nonleague games:
Episcopal Academy 2, Conestoga 1: Kiki Bradica scored with 5:34 left in the fourth quarter to put the Churchwomen in front. Lexi Bruno had the assist. Lauren Notaro netted EA’s first goal on an assist by Sydney Powell. EA’s Caidyn Schmidt (seven saves) and Payton Smith (11 saves) were impressive in goal.
Agnes Irwin 8, Bishop Eustace 1: Mary O’Connor and Lucy Jones led the way for the Owls, scoring two goals apiece. Gabby Lee and Grace Duffy each had a goal and an assist. Goalie Sophia Botta turned away five shots.
Souderton 1, Archbishop Carroll 0: Lexi Yanchunas’ third-quarter goal was the difference as the Indians nipped the Patriots.
Fiona Conboy was excellent in net for Carroll, stopping 18 shots.
Boys Soccer
Tej Bachhal recorded two goals and two assists to lead Marple Newtown to a 4-0 nonleague victory at Interboro Wednesday.
Kai Schultz and Dom Elia also found the back of the net for the Tigers. Jacob Purdy notched the clean sheet.
Girls Soccer
Ava Hall and Mary Landgraff scored as Notre Dame bested Friends’ Central 2-1 in a nonleague match Wednesday.
Cora Johnson and Bella Brennan combined to make three saves for the Irish.
Pennington (N.J.) 4, Episcopal Academy 3: Devon Stewart registered a goal and an assist for the Churchwomen. Maya Le and Emma Garcia added a goal apiece.
