High school girls golf: South a contender in SPC

CHINA GROVE — South Rowan’s girls golf team won its first match under new head coach Jen Page on Wednesday.
The Raiders prevailed on their home course at Warrior.
Page said South has an extra-large team of nine girls, although some are juggling golf with football cheerleading and competition cheer, so they aren’t available for every practice and every match.
The Raiders have many new faces. The usual three scorers in 2025 for a team that frequently finished runner-up to East Rowan in SPC matches were Sara Culbert, Margo Maples and Sawyer Sherrill.
Culbert and Maples graduated, but Sherrill, a senior captain, is back to lead a young team.
Page said the Raiders have added two talented freshmen — Berkley Brown and Bayley Carter — who can be the future of the golf program. They already are making an impact.
In the match at Warrior, Sherrill shot 46 to lead the Raiders. McKenlyn Sanders, a returner who worked hard in the offseason and has made big strides, shot 54. Carter shot 55.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do on our putting because that’s where you score,” Page said. “We hit some great drives, but a three-putt negates that great drive.”
Thursday’s practice was devoted to putting.
Page said the league appears to be wide open. Robinson’s Ava Mason shot 3-over 38 and was the medalist on Wednesday. East Rowan, Carson and Concord were the teams that finished closest to South.
Salisbury won the opening SPC match at McCanless. South was third in that one.
“We’ve only played two conference matches, but the league looks to be very competitive,” Page said.
Page is a long-time teaching pro. Her passion is teaching the game to young players.
“The first thing they have to learn is they are out there to beat the golf course,” Page said. “You can’t worry about opponents because you can’t control what other players shoot. You can only control you.”
