NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men’s soccer team battled back from a two-goal halftime deficit on Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field, but Albertus Magnus College scored the eventual game-winner late in the second half to hand the Cadets a 3-2 setback in their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup of the season.
Albertus Magnus jumped out to an early advantage, scoring twice in the opening 14 minutes off of two free kicks.
Norwich continued to generate chances throughout the remainder of the opening half, with Shea Perkins (Carl Junction, Mo.), Gabriel Cantarero (Annapolis, Md.), Sharmarke Hassan (Burlington, Vt.) and Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) all testing the Falcons goalkeeper.
The Cadets came out with increased intensity in the final third after halftime and quickly began to find more opportunities. Norwich registered 11 second-half shots after recording seven in the opening 45 minutes, hunting the back of the net in a far more ambitious manner than the opening half.
Norwich’s persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Fuentes converted a penalty kick to cut the deficit to 2-1. The junior midfielder continued to generate chances throughout the half, forcing saves from the Falcons keeper in the 68th minute and again later in the match.
The Cadets completed the comeback in the 74th minute when Brian Baek found the back of the net to level the match at 2-2 from a gorgeous cut onto his left foot from the 25 yards out on the right wing. Norwich continued to press forward after drawing even, earning a pair of corner kicks and creating additional chances as it looked to complete the comeback.
Albertus Magnus, however, regained the lead in the 79th minute, scoring off a scrum in the 18 yard box to make it 3-2.
Norwich continued to push for an equalizer over the final 11 minutes. The Cadets earned corner kicks in the 87th and 88th minutes and generated late attempts from Ben Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Fuentes, but Albertus Magnus held on to secure the conference victory.
Fuentes led the Cadets offensively with six shots, three of which were on frame, while Baek added a goal on one shot on goal. Norwich finished the afternoon with an 18-8 advantage in total shots and a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.
With the result, Norwich moves to 1-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in GNAC play.
The Cadets return to Sabine Field on Tuesday, Sept. 15, when they host SUNY Canton at 4 p.m.
