In his Bleacher Report NBA insider updates, Jake Fischer revealed that the Sacramento Kings’ asking price remains steep and is unwilling to be met by the Hornets and other teams for Sabonis.
“Right now, there’s going to be continued disconnect between the Kings wanting to get back positive value and draft compensation for Sabonis compared to other teams not so eager to give Sabonis the contract extension he’s looking for,” Fischer said.
“I’m skeptical of this juncture how much market there were for Sabonis at the Kings’ current asking price. I don’t think Charlotte is really motivated to meet that Kings’ asking price.”
Hornets, Kings failed to land Domantas Sabonis trade
The Charlotte Hornets have emerged as one of the teams being closely monitored in the Domantas Sabonis situation. However, no trade has materialized between Charlotte and the Sacramento Kings at this point.
As previously reported, the Kings’ asking price of multiple draft assets was rejected by the Hornets, preventing the two sides from finalizing a deal.
Sabonis has also been known to have interest in signing a new max contract with his next team outside Sacramento after recently changing his representation.
The Lithuanian star is signed to a five-year, $216.6 million contract with the Kings. He is currently extension-eligible, with two years and $94 million remaining on his current deal through the 2027-28 season.
Domantas Sabonis trade unlikely for Hornets unless Kings lower asking price
Unless the Sacramento Kings reconsider their stance and lower their asking price, any potential Domantas Sabonis trade will remain uncertain from the Charlotte Hornets’ perspective.
If the situation changes, Fischer noted that the Hornets could once again emerge as a team interested in pursuing the big man.
“If that Kings’ asking price comes down, I would think that Charlotte is still a team monitor in Sabonis’ ultimate trade landscape,” Fischer added. “But I don’t think anything is coming to fruition anytime soon.”
