San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling had surgery on his injured left ankle Wednesday and will miss “close to” 10 weeks, coach Kyle Shanahan said. Stribling will be placed on injured reserve later this week.

“We feel good he’ll get back this season,” Shanahan said. “It’s going to take some time.”

Tight end Jake Tonges also needs surgery on an MCL injury in his knee and will miss the remainder of the season, Shanahan said. He was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, while wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster, and tight end Jack Stoll was signed to the practice squad.

What the 49ers’ Week 1 win indicates about this year’s team

Stribling, whom the Niners took with the 33rd pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, injured his ankle twice in last week’s season-opening win over the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia. The first time, he got attention in the medical tent and returned to the field. Then he fell on a non-contact play and was helped off and carted to the locker room.

Shanahan said the training staff tested Stribling after the initial injury using typical protocols, and “he was passing them,” with an Achilles injury being ruled out.

“But when he ran a certain route, it really showed,” Shanahan said. “It was going to happen regardless.”

Shanahan said Stribling was downcast after the game and hoping the injury, diagnosed as a deltoid ligament sprain, wouldn’t turn out as bad as it was.

“It’ll pass,” the coach said. “He’ll be back. And he’ll be good to go when he gets back.”

A 10-week timeline would give Stribling a chance to return in late November. The 49ers visit the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10 on Nov. 15, then face the Minnesota Vikings in Mexico City on Nov. 22, then host the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 29 before visiting the New York Giants on Dec. 6. They will practice in Colorado Springs between Week 10 and Week 11 to adjust to the altitude in Mexico City.

Stribling, 23, had a terrific training camp and preseason, including 11 receptions for 109 yards in only a few quarters across two exhibition games. He led 49ers receivers with 21 offensive snaps against the Rams when he exited for good in the second quarter, though no passes were thrown his way.

The 49ers won 27-7, with Brock Purdy throwing three touchdowns, one each to DeMarcus Robinson, Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel.

The Niners are already missing receiver Ricky Pearsall, who had season-ending knee surgery early in training camp. Christian Kirk, who opened the season on short-term injured reserve with a calf injury suffered on the first day of camp, is eligible to practice after Week 2 and play beginning in Week 5. He is expected to line up primarily in the slot whenever he returns from IR.

San Francisco also has young receivers Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing. Hodge was elevated from the practice squad for the opener and is now on the active roster.

“We have enough (receivers),” Shanahan said. “It’s always tough when you lose two of your main guys, but I think we have as good of depth as anyone in the league. It’s fortunate that (Stribling is) not gone for the year like Ricky — we will get him back. But we have the people to still hold it down while he’s gone.”

Tonges, 27, caught 34 passes for 293 yards and five touchdowns in 2025, with most of that production coming while starter George Kittle was out with a hamstring injury early in the season. Tonges played only eight offensive snaps against the Rams and was not targeted before being injured. Kittle played 30 offensive snaps (46 percent) less than nine months removed from a torn Achilles tendon. He has averaged more than 80 percent of the offensive snaps in eight consecutive seasons.

Stribling and Tonges will give the 49ers 14 players on injured reserve, including six who could return later this season. Kirk, offensive lineman Austen Pleasants, linebacker Nick Martin and cornerback Nate Hobbs went on IR before or soon after the 53-man roster cutdown deadline. Defensive end Sam Okuayinonu has a chance to return later this season after breaking his foot in practice ahead of the opener.

Each team can return up to eight players from injured reserve during the regular season, plus two more players if the team reaches the playoffs.
