In a sit-down interview with CNBC, the Golden State Warriors superstar gave his honest take on the final verdict made by the league leadership around the Clippers’ salary cap scandal.
“I wasn’t surprised,” Curry said. “I think the reason the investigation took as long as it did and the idea that Steve Ballmer, who I’ve gotten to know and is a great guy, is standing by the punishment. So there’s a reason it’s happened the way that it has.
“At the end of the day, Adam Silver had a job to do, and I think the punishment makes sense. And we all move forward.”
NBA punishes LA Clippers for salary cap scandal
Following the conclusion of the year-long investigation by law firm Wachtell Lipton, the NBA slapped the Los Angeles Clippers with the harshest punishment in league history after finding the team guilty of circumventing the salary cap.
For giving Kawhi Leonard illegal and under-the-table deals with several companies, the Clippers were forced to surrender their five consecutive first-round draft picks from 2029 through 2033, pay a $30 million fine, and submit to a strict five-year league compliance and monitoring program under the NBA.
Team owner Steve Ballmer has been issued a one-year suspension from all NBA and team activities, President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker has been handed a one-year suspension without pay, while President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank has received a six-month suspension without pay.
The Clippers have vehemently rejected the NBA’s ruling, vowing to exercise immediate legal remedies to overturn the punishment. Yet in the end, after two weeks of an embattled standoff, Ballmer formally accepted his and his franchise’s fate in a statement.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has already clarified that the league’s punishment for the Clippers is final and will not be changed or reduced in the future.
