CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — The Courts Cape Coral earned national recognition as one of just 41 outstanding tennis facilities in the country, according to the U.S. Tennis Association.

The award recognizes far more than the tennis courts at the facility. It honors the playing experience the complex has created for its members.

The facility features 12 tennis courts and 32 pickleball courts. A plaque now puts The Courts Cape Coral among the best facilities in the country.

“I was a little bit taken aback. I didn’t know that there was an award that was this outstanding facility award, but kind of once it was explained to me, I was very very proud,” said Mary Jo Ellis, a tennis pro at The Courts Cape Coral.

The complex opened in 2024 and was judged on everything from its court surfaces and lighting to its amenities and programming. The recognition highlights the quality of the facility and the people who maintain it.

“We have great people who are hired here, and we have great people who take care of the courts. And sometimes you just have to mention the people who take care of you,” said Karen Gherlone, a tennis player at The Courts Cape Coral.

For many players, the value goes beyond what happens on the court. The facility has created a strong sense of community among its members.

“Our members are the ones who come in, and they really make this community so special,” Ellis said.

Gherlone shared that her husband recently passed away, and her tennis team picked her right back up. They even helped her move into her new home.

“There are a few places where you can find people that rely on to do stuff like that,” Gherlone said.

The community is now recognized on a national stage. Players continue to learn and grow through clinics and team play at the facility.

“You learn something every single time you go out and play, no matter what it is, whether it’s at a clinic like we just had with MJ, or whether it’s just playing with your team,” Gherlone said.
