LAREDO, Texas – The UT Tyler Women’s Soccer program continued its impressive start to Lone Star Conference play on Saturday, earning a 2-0 victory over Texas A&M International. The win improved the Patriots to 3-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play while extending their shutout streak to three consecutive matches.
The Patriots controlled the match from the opening whistle, out shooting the Dustdevils 17-3. Nine of UT Tyler’s 17 shots were on target as the Patriots kept the pressure on the TAMIU defense throughout the morning.
After creating several scoring chances in the opening half, the Patriots finally broke through in the 40th minute. After a UT Tyler throw in, Lily Moreno found the loose ball inside the penalty area and delivered a cross body shot into the back of the net for the first goal of the match. The score was Moreno’s first goal of the season and ended up being the game-winner.
UT Tyler nearly added to its lead several times before halftime as Lexi Luff, Katie Wong, and Mayla Dawkins all put shots on goal forcing saves from the TAMIU goalkeeper.
The Patriots wasted little time increasing their lead after the break though. Just six and a half minutes into the second half, Celine Diaz found a wide-open Ava Harris making a run into the box. Harris then smashed a shot on the ground past the goalkeeper to double the lead to two to nothing. The Sophomore picked her first goal of the season, and career, while Diaz added her first assist of the year on the play.
UT Tyler continued their offensive pressure throughout the second half adding 6 more shots on goal.
Halli Keese generated multiple chances, including a shot in the 67th minute that nearly snuck into the net after the keeper got a hand on it.
Sarah Hayes was just inches away from adding to the Patriots lead in the 65th minute after her shot bounced off the right post, while Katie Wong rattled the woodwork again in the 86th minute.
Defensively, the Patriots were just as dominant. The back line anchored by Arianna Johnson, Savanna Clark, Samantha White, and Audrey Varney limited the Dustdevils to just one first half shot and only three total attempts for the match.
In goal, Robbi Curry recorded her third consecutive clean sheet, finishing with two saves on the day. The seniors’ first save came just before halftime and added another stop late in the second half to preserve the shutout.
UT Tyler’s depth was on display again as their offensive attack featured contributions from throughout the lineup. Harris led the way with three shots, including two on goal. Wong, Keese, Hayes, and Danica Anaya each added two shots of their own, while eight other Patriots registered at least one-shot attempt.
The balance on the pitch for UT Tyler has been a huge factor in the Patriots’ recent success. UT Tyler has outscored their opponents seven to zero over their first two Lone Star Conference matches, and 17 to five overall on the season.
It’s the first road win of the season for the Patriots who moved to 3-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Lone Star Conference play. UT Tyler will stay on the road next week as they head to Dallas Baptist University on Wednesday.
It’s the first time the teams will square off since their matchup in last season’s Lone Star Conference Championship Semifinal Round.
