Philadelphia, PA – Freshman forward Shiloh Moore scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute as the La Salle women’s soccer team rallied from a 1-0 second-half deficit to earn a 2-1 win over Davidson in the Atlantic 10 opener on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The Explorers won their third straight game, improving to 4-3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Davidson fell to 4-4-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. La Salle earned its first win in an A10 opener since 2018, which was a 1-0 road win at Davidson.
Moore’s game-winning goal was a left-footed blast from inside the 18-yard box, past the diving reach of Davidson’s goalkeeper Grace Stair. It was Moore’s second career goal and her second game-winning goal in as many games.
After neither team recorded a shot on goal in the opening half, the game’s first shot on target came in the 60th minute, when La Salle goalkeeper Samantha Widnick made a diving save to deny Annaliese Mann’s attempt.
Ella Barnes nearly equalized just seconds later for the Wildcats, but senior defensive captain Rylee Henson cleared the ball just in front of the goal line to keep the game scoreless.
Davidson finally struck first in the 65th minute when Madelyn Hayes scored from inside the 18-yard box on a sequence set up by Brooke Roumy and Sophia Widdon.
In the 66th minute, the Wildcats almost added a second goal from long range, but Barnes’ shot hit the crossbar, denying Davidson another goal.
On the ensuing counterattack, sophomore forward Kayden Williams was fouled inside the penalty area, and graduate student forward Justyce Hollenbach converted the penalty kick in the 67th minute to bring her season total to six goals. Hollenbach is now tied with Audrey Smith for the most goals in the A10.
In the 71st minute, Reese Montgomery nearly put Davidson back in front, but her strike smashed the crossbar to keep the game level.
Widnick delivered another clutch save on Hayes’ shot in the 80th minute. After Moore’s breakthrough in the 88th minute, the Wildcats had four straight shots from the 18-yard box blocked by the Explorers’ defensive unit in the final minute.
Davidson finished with a 20-13 edge in total shots, but the Explorers had a slight 5-4 advantage in shots on target.
La Salle will travel to Loyola Chicago (3-2-3, 0-0 A10) on Thursday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST at Loyola Soccer Park.
