SALEM, OREGON – The UT Tyler men’s soccer program suffered its first loss of the season Saturday evening, falling 5-0 to Western Oregon at Capital Futbol Club.
The Patriots move to 2-1-3 on the season following the setback, which also marked the first time UT Tyler has been held without a goal this season. The Patriots entered the match having scored in each of their first five matches.
Western Oregon opened the scoring in the 24th minute and added another goal in the 37th minute to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime. UT Tyler recorded five shots during the opening 45 minutes, including attempts from Dennis Nyame, Luis Martinez, Yusef Abdelrahman and Fabrice Ndayishimiye.
Beaux Benson kept the Patriots within striking distance throughout the opening half, making four saves on eight Western Oregon shots. UT Tyler also earned a corner kick in the first half as it looked to create opportunities offensively.
The Wolves extended their advantage early in the second half, scoring in the 51st minute to make it a 3-0 match. The Patriots continued to generate chances, with Noe Coutiño and Henrique Caputo recording shots early in the half before Martinez forced a save in the 62nd minute.
UT Tyler continued to pressure forward throughout the remainder of the match, recording 12 second-half shots. Martinez finished with a team-high five shots, while Coutiño added four attempts and Caputo recorded a shot on goal.
Western Oregon added two more goals in the final 10 minutes to secure the 5-0 victory. Benson finished the night with 10 saves, making seven stops in the second half, as the Patriots were outshot 22-17 overall.
The Patriots will now turn their attention to Lone Star Conference play. UT Tyler will open league competition Wednesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts DBU at Citizens First Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex for Pups at the Pitch.
