Sophie Cunningham has become one of the faces of the WNBA this season. However, that has very little to do with her performances on the court.
The Indiana Fever are having a great year, although that is largely thanks to stars like Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aliyah Boston. Cunningham very much remains a role player on the team.
Her stats this season are worse than every year since 2021. Now, a WNBA analyst has brought up some interesting points to question how much longer she will play basketball.

The Fever suffered a disappointing loss against the Washington Mystics in their latest outing. In this game, Cunningham played just seven minutes, missed two shots, and didn’t have a single statistical contribution.
Sophie is no stranger to coming off the bench, but she wasn’t even able to make a small impact on the game. SiriusXM’s Robin Lundberg pointed this out.
“Sophie has been a really good shooter, she’s been a productive player,” Lundberg said. “When you indicate practices are too tough and you only play seven minutes the next game, people are going to go, ‘Hmm…’
“The coach calls out the defence and the rebounding, that’s something you gotta look in the mirror about. If I had to predict, Sophie Cunningham is not on the Indiana Fever next year.

“There’s a chance she’s not in the league next year. I think she’s laying the groundwork for her post-playing career now… She’s extraordinarily popular. And she’s good at it… But no team wants to constantly be talking about what one of the players said, especially if it’s a role player.
Cunningham’s celebrity would sustain her even if she did decide to no longer play in the W after this season. However, it would be hard to imagine that no team would want to give her a shot as soon as next season.
