SANTA CLARA — The 49ers have a new addition to their injury report on Thursday.
And it is a big one.
Defensive end Nick Bosa landed on the 49ers’ practice participation report with injuries to his knee and calf.
Bosa did not practice Wednesday, but it was a scheduled rest day and not injury related. This one is different.
Bosa sustained a torn ACL in the 49ers’ third game last season, and he was back in time for the regular-season opener two weeks ago in Australia. He has been managing his knee condition since the opening of training camp, and now he is dealing with an unspecified calf injury, too.
The 49ers have already taken a number of hits along their defensive line, and Bosa’s status is a huge key for the team this season.
The 49ers are also dealing with a rash of injuries at wide receiver. Veteran Mike Evans sat out his second day of practice in a row with a hip injury. He leads the 49ers with nine receptions for 103 yards and one touchdown.
The 49ers have depth issues at receiver and defensive line, as they enter their Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Bosa’s availability is needed more than ever with all the injuries on the 49ers’ defensive line.
Starting defensive tackle Alfred Collins is out for the season after sustaining a torn patellar tendon as the 49ers were preparing for their first game of the regular season.
In addition, defensive linemen Sam Okuayinonu (foot) and CJ West (knee) are on injured reserve. They are eligible to return to action at some point this season.
Also, defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. (ankle) is expected to be unavailable for an extended period of time. And edge Romello Height underwent surgery this week on a fractured hand, and he might not be available to face the Cardinals.
The 49ers are expecting the return of Mykel Williams in a couple of weeks off injured reserve. Williams was the 49ers’ first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He sustained a torn ACL last year, and is eligible to play any time after Week 4.
Bosa’s presence is huge for the 49ers. He is a five-time Pro Bowl performer.
The 49ers ranked last in the NFL last season with just 20 sacks in 17 regular-season games. Bosa had two sacks in three games before the injury.
In 87 regular-season games, Bosa has 64.5 sacks. He led the NFL with 18.5 sacks in 2022.
