PUNXSUTAWNEY — Entering the District 9 3A Girls Golf Championships on Thursday at Punxsutawney Country Club, DuBois Area’s group of five players knew that they’d emerge from tournament with the team title as the only team with enough participants to field a team score.
What they didn’t know for sure was whether their team score would meet the standard to advance to the subregional team event to be held in October.
At the end of the day, the DuBois girls hit the nail on the head with their score of 300 meeting the mark to qualify.
On top of it all, Claire Kennis fired a low round of 85 to claim the individual title, earning herself a spot in the individual subregional — which begins next Monday in Meadville — and she’ll be joined there by two of her teammates as Madison McAllister (104) and Ava Wildnauer (111) were also in the top-four at the event to give them a shot at advancing to states.
For those three, their qualification sets up a busy beginning to next week, as they’ll begin play in Meadville on Monday, and if they make the cut from Day 1 will advance to the subregion final on Wednesday.
The day between, Tuesday, won’t be idle, either, as the Lady Beavers will participate in the District 9 Central League championships back at Punxsutawney Country Club that day.
Brynn Martin (117) and Emery Tekely (131) also competed in the team event for DuBois to round out the five-player squad. Bradford’s Daisy Greene (115) finished fourth overall, with her teammate Natalee Popiel (124) also taking part in the seven-player event.
