LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The NM State men’s golf team closed out competition at the William H. Tucker Invitational on Friday, finishing 10th in a deep 15-team field at the University of New Mexico Championship Course. The Aggies improved in each round of the tournament, posting scores of 292, 288 and 279 to finish at 5-under-par 859.
After entering the final round in 13th place, NM State turned in its best score of the tournament with a 9-under 279 on Friday. The Aggies finished ahead of UC Santa Barbara, UTEP, Long Beach State, Missouri and SMU in the final standings.
Leading the way for the Crimson & White was Max Chan, who tied for 20th overall at 3-under-par 213. Chan carded rounds of 74, 68 and 71, highlighted by a second-round 68 that propelled him into the tournament’s top 20.
A trio of Aggies finished tied for 35th at even par 216. Brasen Briones shot 71-75-70, Kostka Horno recorded rounds of 74-74-68 and Jackson Funkhouser posted scores of 74-72-70. Horno’s final-round 68 matched Chan for the team’s low round of the tournament and helped fuel NM State’s strong finish.
Rounding out the lineup, Mateo Payan finished tied for 72nd after registering a 7-over-par 223 across three rounds.
San Diego State claimed the team title at 31-under-par 833, while Brayden Forte of San Diego State and Johnnie Clark of New Mexico shared medalist honors at 13-under-par 203.
