Charlotte, N.C. – The University of Lynchburg women’s soccer team fell short against No. 9 Emory for its first loss of the regular season on Sunday, as Mikayla Camp’s late goal secured a 1-0 victory for the Eagles.

The Eagles outshot Lynchburg 13-8, although the teams were held to four combined shots throughout the first 34 minutes. Emory claimed an 8-5 corner kicks advantage, while both keepers made five saves.

Morgan Oliver and Hannah Phillips forced saves by the Emory keeper Rachel Carr during the first half, but neither squad found the net. Both teams failed to secure a corner kick until the 21st minute as the defenses dominated.

Camp’s goal for Emory in the 72nd minute broke the seal, and Julia Salo made four saves to keep Lynchburg in the contest during the second half. Each of Lynchburg’s final three opportunities resulted in saves, and Emory rode the momentum to the clean sheet victory.

Before Sunday’s game, Lynchburg’s 8-0 mark represented the program’s best start since the 2014 season. The Hornets remain 2-0 in conference play.

Lynchburg returns to Shellenberger Field to host its Code Red match on Wednesday, Sept. 30 as the Hornets welcome Randolph-Macon for a 6:00 p.m. showdown.
