Scottie Scheffler is happy to engage and talk about playing golf, just don’t ask him how it felt to be benched.

Scheffler was part of the Team USA squad that came back from a three-point deficit to win their 11th straight Presidents Cup on Sunday. After the match, NBC’s Cara Banks asked Scheffler about Sunday during his post-match interview. More specifically, the reporter’s first question was about Scheffler’s display of sportsmanship on the 14th hole. Scheffler confronted a heckler after an American fan yelled during his opponent Nico Echavarria’s swing.

“To be honest with you, I don’t even really want to talk about it. I think there’s no real place for that in our game. I think we just leave it at that,” Scheffler said to sort of downplay his response to the heckling incident.

After praising Scheffler for how he handled the heckler, Banks pivoted to asking the world No. 1 about being benched by Team USA captain Brandt Snedeker for the Saturday foursomes. Scheffler has a combined record of 1-8-0 in foursomes during the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. He initially defended Snedeker’s decision, but when Banks asked about Saturday again, Scheffler got a little testy.

“I mean, do you want to talk about today’s match?” Scheffler asked. “I just played some golf out there. You want to talk about that?”

Banks noted she began the interview on 14, as they both shared an awkward chuckle before the reporter continued with more golf questions.

Scheffler obviously played a big role in Team USA coming back to win the Presidents Cup on Sunday. Bigger than the president himself. And Banks would have time to ask some lighter questions about Scheffler’s play. But Scheffler being told by his team captain not to play golf was almost as big a story as the fact that he played in Sunday’s match. Banks couldn’t conduct a post-match interview with Scheffler without trying to get a decent quote from the world No. 1 golfer about what it felt like to be benched.
