Former UConn football running back Camryn Edwards has suffered a season-ending knee injury, Michigan State coach Pat Fitzgerald announced Monday.
Edwards, who racked up 1,240 rushing yards for a historic UConn offense in 2025, transferred to Michigan State (2-2) this offseason for his redshirt senior campaign. The Norwalk native entered the Spartans’ Big Ten opener against Nebraska Saturday as the team’s top offensive weapon, totaling 120 more scrimmage yards than leading wide receiver Rodney Bullard.
The injury occurred just six minutes into Saturday’s game on Michigan State’s most explosive play in the early going, as Edwards found space on a halfback screen and weaved through the Nebraska defense down the left sideline for a 23-yard gain. Nebraska defensive back Danny Odem III finally dragged Edwards down with a hit to his left knee, causing the ball carrier to immediately grab the affected area.
Edwards was carted off the field and into the medical tent at Spartan Stadium Saturday after the play. Fitzgerald, who is in his first season leading Michigan State, did not provide further details about Edwards’ injury. Nebraska pulled away from the Spartans to earn a 31-13 win.
Earlier this year, the NCAA announced that a new eligibility framework will be adopted ahead of the 2026-27 season, leaving Edwards’ college football future uncertain. The “5-in-5” model looks to simplify collegiate eligibility, starting a five-year window once a player enrolls in a college or university while eliminating athletic redshirt rules and medical hardship waivers.
Previously, players who participated in four or fewer games could apply for a medical redshirt and gain an additional year of eligibility. The NCAA’s new eligibility framework states that current student-athletes with eligibility remaining after the 2025-26 academic year can be reviewed under either the previous rules or the new age-based rule, depending on which set of rules is more favorable for the athlete.
Edwards racked up 44 total touchdowns across his prolific career at Norwalk High and earned New Haven Register/GametimeCT State Player of the Year honors in 2021, electing to remain in the Nutmeg State and attend UConn. He was similarly prolific in Storrs after redshirting his freshman season, leaving this offseason with the fourth-most total touchdowns and fifth-most rushing yards in the school’s FBS program history.
