SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, PA. – The Kean University Jersey City women’s soccer team scored four times in the second half to pull away from Penn State Schuylkill, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon.
Kean Jersey City (3-2-1) finished the afternoon with 17 shots and put 11 on frame while Penn State Schuylkill recorded 14 shots with 11 on goal. Somaia Roman, Beatriz Oliveira Dos Santos, Kayla Rodrigues, Gabriella Cardona and Sarah Alvarez each found the back of the net in the win. In net, Jessica Martin turned aside nine shots to help the Cougars secure the victory.
Penn State Schuylkill (3-6) struck first in the 33rd minute when Makenzie Wechsler found the back of the net to give the home team an early 1-0 advantage. Kean Jersey City continued to create chances throughout the opening half, with Cardona testing the Penn State Schuylkill keeper twice while Martin kept the Cougars within striking distance with four saves.
The Cougars finally broke through with less than three minutes remaining in the half when Roman connected on a feed from Alvarez in the 43rd minute to pull Kean Jersey City even at one heading into the break.

Roman nearly gave the Cougars the lead less than a minute into the second half, but her shot was turned away. Kean continued to pressure the Penn State Schuylkill defense and finally took its first lead of the afternoon in the 58th minute when Oliveira Dos Santos found the back of the net off assists from Alvarez and Roman.
The Cougars continued to build on their advantage as Rodrigues converted a penalty kick in the 69th minute to make it a 3-1 contest. Just over two minutes later, Cardona added another goal when she finished off a pass from Oliveira Dos Santos, pushing the Kean Jersey City lead to three.
Penn State Schuylkill refused to go away quietly and cut into the deficit in the 80th minute when Wechsler scored her second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Madison Warnack.
The Cougars remained in control despite playing a player down after Roman was shown a red card in the 87th minute. Kean Jersey City continued to attack and Alvarez capped the scoring in the 89th minute, finding the back of the net off an assist from Cardona to make the final 5-2.
