CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A former Burke County soccer coach was arrested on charges of having sex with a high school student earlier this year, records show.
Herlinton Rugma-Blandon, 32, was arrested Sept. 28 and charged with felony sex act with a student and felony indecent liberties with a student in Catawba County.
Arrest records show Rugma-Blandon is accused of having sex with an underage Jimmy C. Draughn High School student in March 2026 — nearly a year after he worked as a soccer coach at the school.
A spokesperson for Burke County Public Schools told WBTV that Rugma-Blandon worked as a part-time coach from 2023 until the end of the spring 2025 season, while the student attended the school.
The district said he was not dismissed or fired, but finished his seasonal employment.
Rugma-Blandon was held on a $250,000 secured bond and scheduled to appear in court in October.
We understand that situations like this can be concerning for students, families and staff.
Because this matter involves an ongoing law enforcement investigation and a former part-time coach/employee, we cannot comment on specific details other than what is mentioned above.
In general, we take all concerns involving student safety seriously and cooperate fully with law enforcement. All employees undergo background checks and training designed to help safeguard our students. We expect all employees associated with our school district to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and conduct.
Our focus remains on protecting our students and providing a safe, supportive environment for every child.
