CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A high school girls team and a high school boys team doubling up on a state championship is no small feat. There are a lot of things that have to go right, Cheyenne Central Tennis Coach Garrett Seamans said, but the Indians have figured it out. After big state wins this year, the teams decided to honor the students who did it the first time in 1995.
Both the Central boys and girls tennis teams came home from the 2026 Wyoming High School Tennis Championships in Gillette last weekend as victors. With 53 and 51 points respectively, the boys and girls teams as a unit beat out perennial competitors like Kelly Walsh High School’s girls team and the Jackson High School’s boys team.
The two teams sharing the crown is special, but this group has done it before, Seamans said. The group did it in 2024, but the school had a great 1995 season and won out then as well.
Even though they have doubled-up on championships recently, the feat certainly never gets easier, the coach said. During their last shared championship, they knew from the teams’ scores that they had already won it all going into the final day of the competition. This year, they had to fight to the end for it.
“I kind of thought it would be a while before it ever happened again. It’s pretty special to see it within two years of when we did it last, but there were a lot of moving parts to have this happen.”
Two of the Central girls groups had to beat the Trojans to take home the championship. The boy’s meanwhile, had to take home two wins against Jackson.
“They just treated it like any other match and went out there and controlled the courts,” Seamans said.

Seamans has only been coaching at Central for four years. The first class of freshman he worked with are months away from graduation, so this class is special to him and this achievement is a pretty big deal.
“To see this transformation from this silly group of freshman to these silly, goofy seniors—but taking on a leadership role, taking ownership of the court—this is something that I’ll remember forever,” Seamans said. “I am hoping I can keep a winning streak alive for the freshmen and hopefully I can get them the same experience.”
Also special to some of the Indians family is the multi-generational legacy Central High School is contributing to. 31 years ago, the two Central teams doubled up for the first time, honoring the achievement with a photo now iconic to the school’s athletics program.

And to honor their achievement and the continuation of the school’s proud history kicking butt at tennis, this year’s team did the same. Interestingly enough, the team pointed out, some of the kids in the original photo are the parents of some of the kids in the new version.
