ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Navy tennis team resumes its fall season this weekend as the team is slated to compete in three different tournaments in three different states.  Members of the team will compete at the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic, Richmond’s River City Tennis Open and take part in an UTR tournament here in Annapolis.

San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic

This year marks the sixth edition of the tournament that is co-hosted by Navy and the University of San Diego. The event runs Friday through Sunday at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Complex on the USD campus.  There, Jason Kim, Tommy Kim, Steve Nguyen and Jake Young will face players from UC Irvine (Friday, 6:30 p.m. ET), Washington (Saturday, 2 p.m. ET) and Oregon (Sunday, 10:30 a.m. ET) in both singles and doubles.  

There will not be any team scoring during the tournament.

River City Tennis Open

A number of other players will compete in the eighth annual River City Tennis Open.  The event being contested Saturday and Sunday at the Westhampton Courts on the Richmond campus and the Country Club of Virginia features a field of the College of Charleston, James Madison, Hampton, William & Mary and Richmond.  Representing Navy in the flighted tournament will be Charlie Spencer, Lachlan Buckingham, Ethan Garcia, Aaron Gu, Reed Smith and Zach Quattro.

UTR Tournament

The Universal Tennis Rating event is open to all players at any level and is not limited to collegiate players.  Navy is playing host to the event at the Tose Family Tennis Center and the USNA Tennis, which runs Saturday through Monday.  Competing for Navy in the tournament will be George Cutone, Louis Anderson, Jake Jones, Brandon Tragord and James Thomson.

This marks the second weekend of competition for the team this fall, and the first since Sept. 11-13.  

Putting together the best record in singles over that weekend were Aaron Gu and Louis Anderson, both of whom compiled 3-0 records during the Joe Hunt Invite.  Gu won a pair of three-set matches while Anderson recorded a trio of straight-set victories.

The doubles team of Steve Nguyen and James Thomson also tallied a 3-0 record.  The tandem defeated teams from Air Force, Army and Georgetown during the Commander-in-Chief’s Tennis Challenge.
