WHITEWATER — After the conclusion of the Rock Valley Conference Tournament at UW-Whitewater, Jefferson’s girls tennis team maintained its fourth-place finish in the league standings.
“The girls did a great job coming in fourth,” Jefferson co-head coach Paul Ganser said. “I wasn’t sure where we would end up, but I thought it was a good finish for us. We played some of our best tennis of the season. Now we have subsectionals on Monday at Jefferson, which should be exciting to play on our home court.”
The Eagles’ Kaylee Stortz (No. 2 flight) took third while Molly Gee (No. 3 flight) and Kahlan Schuyler (No. 4 flight) each finished fourth.
“Kaylee was the No. 4 seed and battled a Delavan-Darien girl who had beaten her earlier in the year, winning 6-3, 6-4 in the third-place match,” Ganser said. “Kaylee played some great tennis. There were some points that lasted 10 to 12 shots and she was able to do that. Kaylee showed great resiliency.
“Molly, the No. 3 seed, lost a tough third-place match to Delavan, 6-4, 6-1. She battled hard and played great tennis for us.
“Kahlan, also a No. 3 seed, lost a tough match to Delavan to come in fourth. She also played great in her second-round match against Monroe, losing 11-9 in the super tiebreaker. She just couldn’t quite get over the hump. Kahlan has done an outstanding job at the varsity level for only a sophomore.
“Hailey Gyles (No. 1 singles) went down in her second match, scrapping her arm and bruising her elbow but still finished the match. She lost in the super tiebreaker, but I thought that showed toughness.”
In doubles, Jefferson’s No. 1 flight of Emmilia Snyder and Amanda Boucher avenged an earlier loss to Monroe, rallying to win 5-7, 6-3, 10-3.
“Emmy and Amanda played great tennis and played with confidence even though they lost the first set,” Ganser said.
“Isabella Smith and Reese Pinnow won the consolation championship, beating a Big Foot team that had beaten them earlier in the year. They came through and won 6-3, 6-1. Isabella and Reese did a great job of hanging tough.
“Shara Wetzel and Lauren Wetherell lost a tough consolation match to Whitewater 7-6 (6), 0-6, 15-13. A couple of points either way and that result would have been different also.”
