ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Despite a clear possession edge, the Navy men’s soccer team’s (2-5-4, 0-3-1 PL) return home resulted in a 4-1 loss to Colgate (2-5-4, 1-1-2 PL) in Patriot League action Saturday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Off Alex St. John’s first tally in a two-goal, five-point day, the Raiders grabbed a lead just two minutes into the game and Ryan Schachter added to it at 39′, while the Midshipmen’s Will Smith made it a one-score game early in the second half before St. John completed the brace in the 68th minute and Malik Samms sealed the Colgate victory with another goal at 83′.

Colgate went up quick when Blake Pipkin passed it to a streaking Connor Cates, who then crossed it to St. John for the third-minute tap-in. Navy then pushed back with six shots in a 16-minute span, including a pair of low line-drives from Keane Brown that Gavin Vichengrad knocked down, but the Raiders responded by forcing Sam Clark to make three saves at the other side of the field.

Will Wnek then intercepted a Navy pass at 39′ before giving it to Spencer Osborne, who then set up Charlie Yates for a cross into the box for Schachter, beating Clark from near the penalty-kick mark.

With Smith testing Vichengrad twice to start the second half, Navy broke through when Jack Illig’s 56th-minute shot was stopped by Vichengrad, but the rebound found Cohen Nance and his ensuing cross deflected off Smith and into the cage to make it a one-goal game.

St. John earned his brace when a change in possession found Patrick O’Donohue with the ball at 68′ for a quick dish to Pipkin, who launched a long cross over to St. John near the left post, with St. John beating the off-balance Clark for the 3-1 lead.

Samms got his tally in the 83rd minute when he pressured Navy to turn it over to St. John, who then pushed it right back to Samms for the shot past Clark.

Vichengrad earned the nine-save win while Navy’s Clark posted four saves on his end.
