South Shields advanced to the Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying with a 2-0 win on the road against Buxton on Saturday.

Caden Kelly struck in the sixth minute to give the travelling Mariners an early lead, while Toby Onanaye grabbed his first goal for the club after 65 minutes to seal the victory.

It marks the second time Shields have beaten Buxton in seven days, following last week’s 4-0 win at home in the Enterprise National League North, and also the second clean sheet.

Tony Weston tested Jasper Sheik in the opening minutes but his attempt on goal was unfruitful.

Kelly managed to bag a goal almost immediately afterwards, after the team capitalised on a defensive mistake.

Sheik – who made a number of excellent stops throughout the game – reached to deny Weston again from a header nearly 20 minutes in.

Weston continued to impress for the hosts and his 28th-minute volley flashed past the post.

Buxton found fortune through set-pieces – Finn Cousin-Dawson guided his touch, from a corner, just wide, before George Cooper did similar just before the break.

It became clear that a second goal was needed to settle any nerves, and Onanaye got on the scoresheet after the hour mark to do just that.

A lovely attacking move involving Kelly and Cedwyn Scott resulted in Onanaye being handed plenty of space inside the box to bend his shot into the corner.

Sheik preserved Shields’ advantage, as well as his own clean sheet, with more strong saves later on, most notably to stop Johnny Johnston with five minutes remaining.

Shields saw out the win and booked their ticket to the next round of the tournament with minimal fuss.

Mike Williamson’s side return to league action next time out as they visit Macclesfield on Saturday 10th October.
