The Milwaukee Brewers hung on to beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Saturday night, and the Brewers got a home-field assist from the roof at American Family Field during a crucial moment in the ninth inning.

Trailing 3-2 with a runner on first base and one out in the top of the ninth inning, San Diego’s Ty France hit a high flyball down the left-field line. The 105.3-mph batted ball looked like a potential go-ahead two-run home run or a foul ball.

Instead, it turned into an out. The ball hit the roof and was caught in fair territory on the warning track by Milwaukee left fielder Jackson Chourio.

It was a wild scene that featured a review and umpire discussion for a few minutes. And on the FS1 broadcast, Adam Amin, A.J. Pierzynski, and Adam Wainwright couldn’t believe what they were seeing.

“Swing, and a high flyball down the left-field line,” Amin began on the play-by-play. “It’s off the railing! It’s in fair territory! It is caught by Chourio for the second out!”

“Is that gonna be a homer?” Wainwright asked.

“If it’s in fair territory and it goes off the roof or one of the railings, it is in fair territory, and it’s in play… If it’s deep enough to that portion of the ballpark, oh my goodness, this could be a go-ahead home run!” Amin explained.

“I think that was a homer. I think that was a homer,” Wainwright said. “I’ve never seen it. I’ve never seen it. That’s getting out of here, I think.”

“That ball’s a home run,” Pierzynski said. “If it would’ve stayed fair. We don’t know if it would’ve stayed fair.”

“That’s an absolute moonshot,” Wainwright continued.

“Oh my goodness, could this be potentially a go-ahead home run off the railing up there?” Amin asked.

“Again, if it hits the roof in fair territory, it’s in play,” Amin added. “If it hits in foul ground, it’s a dead-ball foul ball. It’s a subjective thing. It’s hard to judge. But that came down to Chourio, and he was there. He played that ball perfectly for a potential out.”

“That might be one of the most unlucky things for the Padres I’ve ever seen,” Wainwright said.

The FS1 broadcast then showed the MLB replay review of the ball hitting the roof.

“That is insane!” Amin exclaimed.

“Oh, it’s definitely gonna be a homer,” Wainwright reacted.

“That ball was going out of the park,” Pierzynski agreed.

“That is unreal! To go that high into the air off the roof!” Amin said.

It was then announced that the call stands as an out after review.

“Two down in the ninth, and Ty France cannot believe it!” Amin explained. “He hit that ball as high as the Eiffel Tower!”

“One of the most unlucky things I’ve ever seen,” Pierzynski said. “I don’t know if that ball was going out. But it sure looked like a home run, and Ty France thought it was a home run.”

“Unlucky for them, and lucky for the other,” Wainwright said. “Most lucky for Milwaukee, and most unlucky for San Diego.”

And even if it was only to be a foul ball instead of a two-run homer, the Padres would’ve still gladly taken that over an out with the tying run on first base in the ninth inning. To have it turn into an out was quite a horrible break for them and an extremely lucky break for the Brewers.

One batter later, Jackson Merrill hit a 109.4-mph line drive to right field that was caught, capping off a brutal-luck finish for San Diego.

The Padres hope for much better luck in Game 2 of the best-of-five NLDS on Sunday in Milwaukee (4 p.m. ET, FS1).
