High school golf season quickly is winding down with only two weeks of the postseason remaining, starting with the District 11 Golf Championships and team subregional events this week followed by the PIAA tournament later this month.
Here is a look at the district tournament for individuals and teams:
District 11 Golf Championships: What you need to know
When: Tuesday
Where: Steel Club, Hellertown
Weather: Partly sunny, high of 62 degrees. No predicted precipitation.
What’s at stake: Berths at the PIAA Golf Championships, which are Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 19-21, at Penn State’s Blue and White Courses
How to qualify: All players must shoot 100 or better to advance to the state individual event, which is Oct. 19-20. All players for the subregional and the Oct. 21 state team events must shoot at least 110.
Who advances: Top 3 in Class 2A girls, top five in 2A and 3A boys. Top 2A and 3A teams advance to the subregional tournaments, which are Thursday: Class 2A is vs. Districts 1-12 at the 1912 Club in Plymouth Meeting; Class 3A is at Steel Club vs. District 12. Tee times for both start at noon.
Districts 4 and 11 plays Monday in a Class 3A girls individual subregional at Frosty Valley Country Club in Danville with two of the 15 competitors qualifying for states, with District 11 having 11 of the competitors.
Tee times: 8:30 a.m., 3A players off hole No. 1; 9:25, 2A players off No. 15.
Playoffs: Conducted to determine the district’s individual champion, the last individual qualifying spot and the team champion.
League champions: Nazareth’s Holden Sparks beat Pocono Mountain East’s Chris Gerheart by one shot to capture the EPC title, but the Cardinals knocked off the Blue Eagles by two shots to win the team title. Pocono Mountain East’s Maddie Van Buskirk beat Emmaus’ Ella Bloszinsky by three shots to win the girls title.
Salisbury’s Chase Yakaitis beat Saucon Valley’s Anthony Albano by one shot for the Colonial League title. Southern Lehigh’s Lexi Miller won the girls crown by eight shots.
Tamaqua’s Sam Vinc repeated as the Schuylkill League champion by beating Schuylkill Haven’s Anthony Evans by three shots.
District 11 last year: Schuylkill Haven’s Evans beat Saucon’s Albano for the 2A boys title in a playoff. Moravian Academy’s Mara Dubacher became the fourth District 11 golfer to win four championships in 2A girls.
Nazareth’s Holden Sparks held off Northampton’s Derek Moyer by a shot for 3A boys gold. Emmaus’ Alexis Teichman knocked off Southern Lehigh’s Miller in a playoff for 3A girls title. Nazareth held off Southern Lehigh for the 3A team title. Moravian Academy won the 2A championship by 11 shots.
