Elkins, W. Va. – After A strong start to the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Men’s Golf Championships, the Wheeling University Men’s Golf team was back in action for round two on Monday. After a slow start, the Cardinals put their foot on the gas in the back nine and held their second place standing in the tournament field. They shot 300 (+12) as a team in the round and sit just nine strokes back of Glenville State for the MEC Men’s Golf Championship.
There was a trio of Cardinals atop the leaderboard, with freshman Cormac Pearson shooting 74 (+2) and moving into third in the individual standings. It would not be the strongest start for Pearson, who shot double on the first hole of the day. However, he was able to settle in after that, shooting a pair of birdies over the next six holes, dropping his score to +1. That is where he would sit at the turn, but another double on hole 11 would bring his score to +3 with seven holes to play. He would even out once again, hitting five straight pars and still sitting +3 on hole 18. He would come through with one final big performance, picking up a birdie on the last hole to bring his score to +2, tying him atop The Wheeling leaderboard with two of his teammates. The effort would also help him secure a top three spot heading into the final round, sitting tied for third with a two round score of 145 (+1).
After sitting just outside the top five after round one, the biggest move up the leaderboard came from graduate student Sean Dobson. While he added two strokes to his score from the first round, Dobson would jump three spots to 5th overall, thanks to a consistent performance on both the front and back nine. The Graduate student would shoot +1 On each half of the course, with his lone birdie of the day coming on the back nine. He would hit it on hole 16, bringing his score down to +1 for the round, and finish things with a par on 18 to finish at +2. The final cardinal to shoot 74 for the round was Elias Ekenes-Fosback, who took three strokes off of his round one score. Like his teammates, it was a strong back nine that helped him lower that score, where he had two birdies. His biggest would come on hole 18, where he made a long putt to secure birdie and move him into a tie for 12th in the field.
Rounding out the scoring portion of the event was Lodin Femoen, who shot 76 (+6) For the round. He would hit one birdie on hole 14 and added 11 pars to finish his day on the course. Rounding out the team was Zak Collins, who shot an 85? (+13) To round out the event, hitting two birdies and seven pars throughout his round.
