So far the only losses on the season for the Summerville Girls Tennis team have come at the hands of the two-time defending Class AA state champion Academic Magnet.

The Green Wave is on track to win the 5A Region 5 Championship, having won all its region matches this season. That includes two wins over James Island, which won Summerville’s region in both 2024 and 2025, and a win over West Ashley. Summerville didn’t beat both West Ashley and James Island last year or the year before.

Senior Grace Hough is back as the Green Wave’s No. 1 Singles player. Sister Abigail Hough, a sophomore, returns to the No. 2 Singles spot.

“Grace is a senior, team captain and our leader,” said Summerville coach Richard Schulz. “She has academic scholarships and plans to attend Clemson. She has been with us for six years and been tremendous. Abby may be more talented than Grace, but Grace is a smarter player as of right now.”

Freshman Ann Myers Watson holds down the No. 3 Singles spot. The Singles lineup is rounded out by Maddie Ru Lloyd at No. 4 and Ella Scott at No. 5.

“Ann has shown more improvement over last year than any player I’ve ever coached,” Schulz said. “Maddie Ru has grit and Ella is only an eighth-grader who will be great.”

Other members of the team are Kyleigh Grow, Sara Meyer, Tessia Nyman, Fernanda Merdina, Gillian Lloyd, Abigail Sullivan, Addie Johnson and Ava Chapman.

“We’ve played good competition and beat most of the teams we came up against,” Schulz said. “We feel eventually we will face Wando and they will be tough, but all our girls give it their all. Grace sets the tone for us and our practices are harder and better than most of our kids will face in a match. I can’t say enough about their sportsmanship, togetherness and the volunteer work they do.”
