The Santa Rosa Junior College men’s soccer team is officially one of the top-ranked teams in the state.
The Bear Cubs debuted at No. 2 in the first California Community College Athletic Association Top-20 poll earlier this week and garnered two of the 14 first-place votes. Evergreen Valley is No. 1 and received the other 12 first-place votes.
The Bear Cubs are 8-1 overall on the year and began Big 8 conference play with two shutout victories over the last week. They beat San Joaquin Delta 1-0 on Friday and Modesto 3-0 on Tuesday.
Henry Drozdowicz (Vintage) scored the game winner in the 90th minute off assists from Jordan Mazariegos and Connor Wharton against Delta, while Joshua Rodriguez (Santa Rosa), Yahir Trejo (Windsor) and Matthew Benz all found the back of the net against Modesto.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jaiyah Fuksman had three saves in both games and now has 24 on the year. He’s also second in the CCCAA in goals-against average at 0.40. SRJC’s defense and goalkeepers have only allowed three goals this season, the second-best mark in the state.
SRJC men’s wrestling
The SRJC men’s wrestling team is ranked in the top 10 in the state and has a handful of individuals ranked among the state’s best.
The Bear Cubs, who are coming off a 22-21 dual win over Sacramento City last Thursday, were tied with Sac City for No. 10 in the CCCAA rankings.
Freshman Jonah Bertoli (Cardinal Newman) is the top-ranked wrestler in the state at 197 pounds. He won his weight class at the Lemoore Invite two weeks ago and was given the Most Outstanding Upper Weight Award.
Sophomore Asher Nischke is also ranked No. 8 in the state at 285 pounds.
Other SRJC wrestlers making honorable mention in the state rankings were sophomore Connor Jeong (125), freshman Rueben Castro (149), freshman Sam Dehan (157), freshman Sam Borre (157), freshman Judah Palley (174) out of Ukiah and Ronan McAllister (184).
SRJC women’s soccer
The SRJC women’s soccer team is ranked in the top 20 in the first CCCAA poll of the season.
The Bear Cubs (6-3-1, 1-1 Big 8) checked in at No. 15 in the state.
They began conference play last week with a 1-0 win over No. 17 San Joaquin Delta before falling 1-0 to No. 10 Sierra on Tuesday.
Grace Forney (Petaluma) scored the lone goal in the win over Delta off an assist from Nathali Mendoza (Cardinal Newman). The loss to Sierra snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak.
The Bear Cubs will play at No. 3 Folsom Lake on Friday before hosting No. 9 Modesto next Tuesday.
SRJC women’s volleyball
The SRJC women’s volleyball team has dropped its last two matches of Big 8 play but are still in the top 25 in the latest CCCAA rankings.
The Bear Cubs are No. 23 in this week’s poll, a two-spot drop from last week, and are coming off a four-set loss to No. 10 San Joaquin Delta on Friday, which is now No. 6 in the state.
In the loss, Nyejzniya Krohn led the way offensively with 13 kills, Caydance Kremer had 34 assists and 13 digs and Giana Tamayo had a team-high 24 digs.
The Bear Cubs are 12-4 overall and 3-3 in the Big 8 heading into a home conference match on Friday against Sierra.
