CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Each of the four Florida Gulf Coast women’s tennis players competing in Thursday’s qualifying rounds of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships as tournament action got underway in Coral Gables.
FGCU tallied wins over Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic and Florida International in the first day’s action.
The day began with Africa Burillo Berezak’s 6-1, 6-1 win over Georgia Southern’s Natalie Crawford, then Sabrina Jaramillo’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Georgia State’s Sara Montano before Anjali Kotecha fought through a 7-5, 7-5 win over FAU’s Alexia Patru. All three would advance to the second round of qualifying.
Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to advance anyone past that point. Burillo Berezak fell, 6-1, 6-1, to Florida State’s Laura Putz, third-seeded Berrak Kocak of Miami topped Jaramillo, 6-2, 6-4, and fourth-seeded Daria Volosova, also of Miami, took a three-set battle over Kotecha, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. Cecilie Maeland, who had a first round bye, dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 battle to USF’s Loana Vargas.
Maeland would get her first win of the season in a consolation round later in the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over FIU’s Mia Sarcev.
Action at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships continues Friday morning with the main singles draw. At 7:45 a.m., Nora Svensson will face Miami’s Raquel Gonzalez and Maria Vargas faces Florida’s Nikola Daubnerova. Gonzalez ranks fourth in the Southeast Region.
At 12:30 p.m., June Bjork will face North Florida’s May Fadida then Ashley Matz will oppose Miami’s Michaela Laki at 2 p.m. All four Eagles competing in singles on Friday received main draw selections, the most in program history.
Doubles action starts Friday afternoon beginning with Maeland and Kotecha facing USF’s Sienna Leeson and Margherita Marcon at 2:30 p.m. An hour later, Burillo Berezak and Jaramillo will face Miami’s Kocak and Jaquelyn Ogunwale and an hour after that, Matz and Vargas will square off against FAU’s Patru and Malika Amirgalieva.
Svensson and Bjork received the ninth seed in doubles action and a first-round bye to go along with that. The duo will face the first round winner of doubles teams from FAU and USF at a time to be determined.
