Fredericksburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women’s soccer team remained even with Mary Washington after 90 minutes for a 0-0 draw at Ray Gordon Field on Saturday afternoon, marking the Hornets’ ninth clean sheet of the season.
Mary Washington owned a 12-11 shot advantage, while both teams finished with three corner kicks. The Hornets tallied five saves throughout the contest, led by Julia Salo’s four to secure the draw.
Both defensive units dominated the opening 30 minutes, as the teams combined to post four shots. The Eagles forced a pair of Salo saves in the 30th and 31st minute, although both shots were fired from outside the 18-yard box.
Makayla Hargrove left a shot wide in the 32nd minute for the Hornets’ final chance of the half. Defensively, Ellie Goldberg made the save of the match in the 45th minute; as the Eagles directed a header past Salo, Goldberg deflected the oncoming shot with her foot for a last-second stop.
Lynchburg’s offense generated nine chances in the second half, including five within 14 minutes. The Hornets utilized set pieces to earn the lion’s share of possession, although neither team could capitalize.
The Hornets’ final shot on target arrived in the 78th minute, but the Eagles collected a save after the ball deflected off the knee of Morgan Oliver.
Neither team found a game winner in the final minutes, and Lynchburg moved its record to 10-2-1 to cap the final nonconference match of the season. Five of Lynchburg’s 11 starters played all 90 minutes.
The Hornets will stay local for their next conference clash as they travel to Randolph College for a 7:00 p.m. meeting with the Wildcats on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
