CASPER, Wyo. — The Kelly Walsh High School girls golf team was recently the last team standing as state champions, and the squad was recognized for the achievement at the Natrona County School District 1 Board of Trustees’ Monday meeting.
Head Coach Nick Landess described the season as a “storybook ending” for the five senior golfers, who concluded their high school careers by capturing the 2026 Class 4A state title in Evanston.
Throughout the regular season, the squad accumulated multiple top-three team finishes and placed several individual medalists inside the top 10. Despite consistently finishing in second or third place, though, the team did not win a single regular-season tournament prior to the state championship. The coach told trustees that the squad got better as the year went on, culminating in their best collective outing in the final competition of the year to take home the gold.
“What a great perseverance story,” NCSD1 Trustee Thea True-Wells said with a smile.
The championship roster includes five seniors: Khloe Romo, Madeline Tanner, Peyton Hamrick, Emmy Elston and Suzanna Avent. During the state championship, Romo, Elston and Hamrick all finished in the top 10 individually, propelling the team to victory.
The Trojans captured the state title with a score of 390, 3 shots better than runner-up Thunder Basin. Laramie finished the event in third.
Trustee Alex Petrino, speaking as a former four-year member of the Kelly Walsh golf program, congratulated the golfers and voiced her pleasure at seeing the growth of the sport.
“I am just over the moon and thrilled with the participation in women’s golf, because it used to not be like that,” Petrino said. “So I’m very excited for you all.”
