Could the New York Yankees help the New York Mets address their problem at first base this offseason? A prominent MLB insider floated the idea this week.

The Mets and Yankees’ seasons went in very different directions this year. The team from Queens was an expensive disappointment that sat at the bottom of the National League East standings for much of the 2026 season. On the other side of the city, the Bronx Bombers were in contention for the American League East title all year long.

However, after the Yankees were ousted from the playoffs by the Tampa Bay Rays last week, both New York clubs will go another season without a championship. While a new collective bargaining agreement might affect how they proceed this offseason, there is no doubt that both clubs will look to improve the roster in the winter.

Before the Yankees can add to the roster, they must figure out what they plan to do at first base and designated hitter. Luis Garcia Jr. and Ben Rice are long-term options for either position. However, they still have 17-year veteran Giancarlo Stanton on the roster, and after an injury-filled season, it would behoove the team to use Aaron Judge more frequently at DH in 2027 and beyond.

The Pinstripes would like to hold on to the 27-year-old, and that is why there has been recent speculation he could be moved to second base next season. However, the New York Post Joel Sherman noted on Tuesday that Garcia Jr. and Rice on the right side of the infield could be a problem defensively. Meaning that he might be the odd man out, especially since he has a lot of trade value after posting career highs in home runs (30) and RBIs (92).

What would a Luis Garcia Jr. trade cost the New York Mets?

When running down potential trade partners, Sherman floated an interesting idea when he suggested the Mets might be a landing spot for the seven-year veteran.

After a pair of rock-solid seasons, Garcia Jr. had a career year in 2026, so his value is at a high point. Furthermore, Yankees management is well aware of the blowback their Mets contemporaries felt for not adequately replacing team great Pete Alonso after he left in free agency last offseason. Meaning they will look to take advantage of that fact in rare trade talks between the in-city rivals.

So what could the Mets offer that might interest the Yankees? They certainly have a need for a catcher after an awful season for Austin Wells at the plate. Former top prospect Francisco Alvarez would certainly be an upgrade. But that won’t be enough to get a deal done.

Both Brett Baty and Mark Vientos would address needs at second and/or third on cheap contracts. If the Yankees scouts like either, Alvarez, Batty or Vientos, and a solid prospect might get a deal done.

If Yankees management isn’t high on either the Mets will probably have to package Alvarez with AJ Ewing. A top prospect who showed a lot of potential in his rookie season, can replace Trent Grisham, play center and bring speed on the base paths.
