Zero Carbon Bioethanol 150 Preview
Layne Riggs tightened the championship battle with an important victory last week at Charlotte Motor Speedway. After starting the race in 13th, Riggs knew his truck had race-winning potential, but the job wasn’t done until the final laps. Championship rival Kaden Honeycutt led a race-high 85 laps and didn’t give up the lead to Riggs until fewer than 10 laps remained. After relinquishing the top spot, Honeycutt lost one more position to Christian Eckes, allowing Riggs to cut the points deficit to just 17. With four races remaining, Riggs and Honeycutt are turning the championship battle into a two-horse race. This week, the series heads west to Phoenix for the first time since the 2025 championship decider. Corey Heim won that race and the title nearly a year ago, and both Riggs and Honeycutt will be hoping to come out on top and move one step closer to putting the championship trophy within reach.

Phoenix Raceway’s unique 1.0-mile oval will test the contenders this week in the next step toward the championship. With long, flat corners and relatively flat banking, the track puts a premium on mechanical grip while giving drivers several grooves to search for speed. That can create side-by-side racing, but starting near the front is still a differentiating factor. No Phoenix winner has started deeper than 11th since 1995, when the victor came from 16th. That history makes qualifying one of the weekend’s most important tasks, though the race can still be won or lost on pit road. Two-tire stops are common, and a well-timed caution can give teams an opportunity to gain valuable track position through strategy. There will be options once the green flag falls, but the clearest path to victory starts with qualifying well and holding onto track position when the pressure rises.

Fantasy players are not lacking in top driver choices this week at Phoenix. Multiple Phoenix winners and consistent top-five and top-10 finishers fill out the most expensive tier. Arguments can be made for selecting any of those drivers, but this lineup goes with Kaden Honeycutt. The championship contender is in fine form, nearly won last week before Layne Riggs took the lead with less than 10 laps remaining, and he has never finished lower than fourth at Phoenix. From four series starts at this track, Honeycutt’s average finish is 6.8 with an average start of 13.8, and his current form makes him one of the top choices this week.
William Sawalich will make his seventh series start of the season at Phoenix. He has one prior Truck Series start at the track, but he crashed out of that race in 2024. Fantasy players should not put too much weight on that result, though. He also has three prior NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series starts at Phoenix, including two top-15 finishes. Through six races this season, Sawalich has three top-10 finishes and an average finish of 14.7. Combine that with his average starting position of 16.3, and fantasy players can be relatively confident that he will improve upon his starting position and score points this week.
Next in line is Daniel Hemric, another driver fantasy players should be able to rely on for top-15 points. In four starts at Phoenix, Hemric has finished in the top 15 twice and has an average starting position of 15.3. His Phoenix record is not the most exciting part, though. Hemric enters this race in really nice form with five straight finishes of 12th or better. That is his best string of finishes all season, and momentum is in his corner to extend that run this week.
This week’s visit to Phoenix should give Ben Rhodes a boost after finishing 21st at Charlotte. The ThorSport Racing driver has 11 prior starts at Phoenix with an impressive average finish of 10th, even with a crash in last year’s race. Before that incident, Rhodes had six straight Phoenix finishes of ninth or better. He also had six straight top-20 finishes before last week. This week’s trip to Phoenix gives him a chance to start another streak of good results and close out the season strong.
Like Rhodes, Jake Garcia will also be looking at this week’s race as an opportunity to start a new positive trend. His 29th-place finish at Charlotte last week ended Garcia’s four-race run of top-15 finishes, three of which were top-10s. His opportunity at Phoenix looks more promising, though. From four prior starts, Garcia’s average Phoenix finish is 9.5 despite an average start of 18th. He was sixth in this race last season and has never finished lower than 16th at the track.
Justin Haley rounds out the lower-priced selections thanks to his recent uptick in results. The No. 16 Ram driver has finished 11th or better in each of the last four races. It has been quite the turnaround for Dodge after a slow start to the season, and Haley has recently shown what the brand is capable of. He also has three prior Phoenix starts with a best finish of seventh. With Dodge improving, Haley is poised to take advantage.
Best Bets for the Zero Carbon Bioethanol 150
Odds via DraftKings Sportsbook as of 4:00 PM ET Thursday
Race Winner – Kaden Honeycutt +500
Top-Five Finish – Christian Eckes +100
Matchup – Chandler Smith -120 vs. Kaden Honeycutt -110
This week’s race could be wide open. While Kaden Honeycutt and Layne Riggs work to make the championship fight a two-driver affair, there are a handful of drivers that could contend for this week’s win. Given that competition, fans can get better odds than usual for Kaden Honeycutt. The Tricon Garage driver is in excellent form and has never finished outside of the top 10 in this race. Honeycutt finished third last year at Phoenix and hasn’t finished lower than seventh in a race this season since July. To get these odds with that record is a bargain. Similarly, fans can go with a head-to-head matchup between Honeycutt and Chandler Smith. While Smith could also be considered a potential race winner, with the championship on the line, fans should expect Honeycutt to have a little more hunger. Smith has also never finished outside of the top 10 at Phoenix and won this race in 2024.
Christian Eckes falls into the potential race-winner category but still offers positive odds for a top-five finish. He enters this weekend’s race with back-to-back runner-up finishes propelling him forward. He also has been productive at Phoenix with a win and five top-10 finishes from six starts. With Honeycutt and Riggs running away with the points lead, this week’s option to grab Eckes for a top-five finish is an attractive play.
