Coedpoeth WFC’s over-70s squad secured the national title in Newtown, winning the play-off finals after an unbeaten 24-game season in the North Wales league.
They emerged as champions after a decisive 2-0 win against Merthyr.
Alan Edwards, captain of the team, said: “We were determined to bring the trophy home for Richie.
“He would have been proud of the way we played.
“We did it for him.”
The win was bittersweet, coming after the team learned on the eve of the competition that their striker, Richie Roberts, had passed away after battling illness for several months.
Before the games began, players and officials from all teams gathered for a minute’s silence in Mr Roberts’ memory.
Mr Edwards said: “It was a very emotional moment and a fitting tribute, having the walking football community from across Wales come together to remember Richie.”
Coedpoeth edged out defending champions Deeside, with both teams finishing level on points, but Coedpoeth were champions, having scored more goals over the course of the day.
The team was unbeaten throughout the North Wales league season and reached the national play-offs by topping the table.
At the play-offs, they faced the best teams from South Wales as well as runners-up from the North Wales league.
Coedpoeth’s line-up on the day included Peter Evason, Dave Plack, Alan Edwards, David Williams, Geoff Pilmoor, Pete Dessington, Les Williams, Dave Donaghy, Neil Benson, and Keith Hughes.
