PROVO, Utah – Utah State women’s tennis competed at the ITA Regionals tournament this weekend at BYU, led by a pair of main draw victories from sophomores Terezia Mlkva and Sabina Pintea. The Aggies also went 12-1 as a team in singles matches outside of the main draw.

Pintea posted a team-best four victories, including her two wins in the main draw. Pintea opened qualifying with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Idaho State’s Victoria Grymalska before defeating New Mexico’s Nadia Victoria Nemeth, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the main draw. In the main draw, Pintea defeated the tournament’s ninth-seeded singles player, Eszter Kis-Czako of UNLV, 6-4, 6-2, before earning a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Utah’s Elena Daskalova. Pintea’s run ended against eventual semifinalist, Wyoming’s Silver Bijlsma. 

Mlkva earned two main draw victories, defeating Montana State’s Angle Bean, 7-6, 6-3 in the opening round before a win over seventh-seeded Yu-Yun Chen from BYU, 6-3, 6-1. Mlkva’s run ended against eventual tournament finalist Sage Bergeson from BYU in a three-set match. 

Seniors Tayla Wilmot and Tia Clemens each recorded two singles victories in qualifying. Wilmot defeated Nevada’s Lucie Vagnerova, 6-2, 6-2, and New Mexico’s Maria Matsoukatidi, 6-0, 7-6 (4), to reach the main draw of the tournament. Clemens won against Nevada’s Shinar Zahra Shukayna Heriyadi Sunggoro, 6-3, 6-1, and against Utah Tech’s Sophie Dowdell, 6-1, 6-0, to earn her invite to the main draw.

In extra matches, USU recorded another six singles victories. Sophomore Chahd Tourkhani, after falling against the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed in the main draw, picked up wins over BYU’s Angelique van der Walt (6-1, 6-4) and Utah Tech’s Adriana Zurita Berdecio (6-4, 6-4). Freshman Giulia Musat earned two wins as well, defeating New Mexico’s in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6), and Nevada’s Kennedy Robinson, 6-2, 6-0. Wilmot and Clemens each added another singles win as Wilmot defeated Weber State’s Emma Roberts, 6-1, 6-4, while Clemens won against New Mexico’s Maria Matsoukatidi, 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles play, Pintea and Musat earned Utah State’s lone doubles victory, defeating Montana’s Emma Marais and Paige Bott, 8-3.

The Aggies will continue their fall tournament schedule at the Pac-12 Individual Championship next weekend in Spokane, Washington, on Oct. 23-25.
