ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Long-wanted athletic improvements for Buckeye Local Schools continue to move forward at Edgewood High School.

BLS Superintendent Patrick Colucci said a new track and field facility broke ground last week, and district leaders hope to see it operating by next spring.

“We’re pretty excited about it,” he said.

BLS has been without a track of its own for 26 years, Colucci said.

Buckeye track and field students have had to practice and play games at facilities outside the district, he said.

The track and field facility provides a beginning for future BLS leaders and boards to make further athletic upgrades, Colucci said.

“It certainly lays the foundation for potentially adding onto the whole stadium and football and soccer field, but obviously with the budget constraints right now, we’re not in the position to do that,” he said.

More decisions would need to wait until the district can financially move forward, Colucci said.

Football and soccer facilities at Edgewood would mean high school students would not need to travel to Corlew Stadium for games, he said.

“It all works out in the betterment of the students if we can put everything there,” Colucci said.

Work on tennis courts on Edgewood is close to finish, Colucci said.

“They look pretty good,” he said.

As part of the upgrades, three new tennis courts were added, and three existing ones were renovated, Colucci said.

District administration and BLS board members wanted to see the tennis court work, so matches could run faster, he said.

“We only had three courts,” Colucci said. “Some of the matches were going into the dark.”

The existing tennis courts were in need of repair too, he said.

“It just all kind of fell into place,” Colucci said.
