The Hurricanes are on top of the college football world — for now.

For the first time since Dec. 8, 2002, Miami is the No. 1 team in the AP Top 25.

The Hurricanes moved into the top spot after a double-overtime victory against rival Florida State. Miami, which was previously No. 3, moved up two spots after the previous No. 1 Georgia lost to Auburn and No. 2 Notre Dame lost to BYU.

Miami is also No. 1 in the USA Today coaches poll and in the FWAA-NFF Super 16.

Although the Hurricanes are the new top team, Miami coach Mario Cristobal denied that the midseason ranking meant much to the team when asked about the possibility.

“I think we have a good enough sample size of 2026 to know that’s absolutely insignificant and irrelevant with the changing of the guard from week to week,” Cristobal said. “I don’t see it as a (big deal). I honestly really don’t. Just has no value to our processes and whatnot. But all I’ll focus on the real one that’s important, the 1-0.”

The No. 1 spot has been a precarious position lately. Texas was the No. 1 team two weeks ago before losing to unranked Oklahoma. Georgia took the spot and promptly lost to unranked Auburn. Miami plays unranked Pitt on Saturday.

Miami has played one ranked team this season: No. 17 Wake Forest. They have one ranked team still ahead on the schedule: No. 4 Notre Dame.
